NOT FOR WELDING FUMES

I bought this "Welding Valved Respirator" believing it would offer protection from the welding fumes I occasionally inhale. Wrong!

I opened a new package of welding rod and happened to see the MSDS. That prompted me to take a closer look at the 3M 8515 Respirator label. The card label simply states "Welding Valved Respirator" - "USE FOR: Welding..." Sounds like it would work for welding fumes - Not so! The card label is misleading.

The User Instructions state in at least two places "Do not use for welding fumes". In another place it states "...will not filter gases, vapors or odors."

The product description should be updated to show this.

As a retired nurse I am familiar with N-95 masks, had to wear them more often than I would have liked but I am still healthy and strong so they have all worked...

BUT nowadays I create stained glass and purchased this mask to wear while soldering to avoid the fumes and during glass grinding to, well, you can imagine the particles that fly there...
I wanted to write this review to convey how comfortable this mask is on my face and head. I am confident wearing it as I believe it is filtering out all the harmful fumes, can't taste or smell them like I could with just a bandana tied over my nose and mouth. This is a great investment if you are concerned with what you are inhaling with your work or hobbies or in life general out in our big, big world. Would be a great choice if you are near the wildfires in California for filtration of smoke and such. Definitely will buy again when my current one needs replacing.

I use these while I am MIG welding, I read a few of negative reviews but I can attest that these seriously work great. They may not block all fumes, although I cannot smell anything and leave at the end of the day without scratchy throat. You should see the amount of suit that is caked on this mask, so it does work very well in blocking particulates and filtering out odors.

I purchased this after reading the horrible, potential but ever-present, side effects of welding fumes. So far it is comfortable and I have repeatedly taken it on/off. I can't wear my safety glasses under my welding helmet, but I do notice a significant reduction of "fume smell" while wearing the respirator. So, for the money it's decent and I truly hope it helps from the potential fume damage that accompanies my new welding hobby.
