Use when around solvents, pesticides, and paint; helps protect against certain airborne contaminants.
As one of the leading designers and manufacturers of respirators in the world, 3M provides products that address the needs of both workplace, regulated applications and do-it-yourself, non-regulated applications. For workplace uses, employees may be exposed to known concentrations of harmful contaminants for part or all of the workday. In these situations, respirators are intended to help protect the wearer by reducing their exposure to airborne contaminants from a level that may be hazardous to one that is considered safe or acceptable according to government established levels. In addition, home users cannot easily determine exposure levels nor do they have ready access to the type of training medical evaluation and fit testing needed to be in compliance with workplace respirator standards. In these situations, respirators are intended to help keep non-harmful dusts and certain particles out of your nose, mouth and lungs and with some filters help eliminate annoying odors only.
About NIOSH Respirators
This respirator is government approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) as an N95 class respirator and is designed for workplace, regulated uses and applications. NIOSH certification means the respirator has passed stringent government performance standards including filtration efficiency testing and provides at least 95% filtration efficiency solid and liquid particles that do not contain oil.
1. Place respirator over mouth and nose, then pull harness over the crown of your head
2. Take bottom straps in both hands, place them in back of your neck, and hook them together.
3. Position face-piece low on the bridge of your nose for optimal visibility and best fit.
4. Adjust top straps first, then lower neck straps by pulling on ends. Do not pull too tight. Strap tension can be decreased by pushing out on back side of buckles. Perform a positive pressure seal check.
Positive Pressure Seal Check
1. Place the palm of your hand over the exhalation valve cover and exhale gently. If face-piece bulges slightly and no air leaks are detected between your face and the face-piece, a proper fit has been obtained
2. If air leakage is detected, reposition respirator on your face and/or readjust tension of the elastic straps to eliminate leakage
3. Repeat above steps until a tight seal is obtained

+ Comes with extra filters in package
+ Easy to put on and remov
+ Will not interfere with my spectacles
+ Very comfortable (need to get used to it - for me it was less than 10 minutes)
+ Very adjustable, you don't need to pre-adjust the mask before wearing it. Simply pull the elastic after wearing it and it tightens. Similarly if you want to ease it, pull the plastic tab and you are done
+ Easy to breathe in (I do not feel the difference (breathing hard) while wearing the mask)
+ At $30/- this is cheap
Update (Aug 2014):
I have this respirator for 6 years now and have used it consistently. I have gone through multiple cartridges and filters and this thing is still working well. Plastic straps are now weakening a bit and will likely fail in another year or so (but no complaints).
I have used this extensively for almost all kind of projects (indoor/outdoors - all kind of wood chemical, cement, sanding PT pine etc etc) and I never smelled anything. If you are burning wood (like you have a dull blade on a saw) you will smell it though.
I occasionally vacuum the exhausts in the front after a very heavy day of sanding and it seems to make breathing better.
Very satisfied with purchase and will likely replace with same mask again when time comes.
4 ½ stars- I bought this product specifically for its ability to block organic vapors in the 3M Hi-Tack 76 Spray Adhesive. It was an unqualified success in keeping those vapors out of my respiratory system. The one time I felt encumbered by it and removed it to do some detail work a nose length's distance from the project (inside a vehicle), I paid for it by spending a few hours the remainder of the day trying to clear my upper bronchial area and throat.
The respirator comes with 4 huge foldout pamphlets.
1 for the Organic Vapor Cartridge
1 for the Particulate Filter
1 for the respirator body
1 outlining the protections provided for 38 configurations of various respirator components.
Moreover, the user is directed to read and fully understand all of these instructions before proceeding AND before occupational use, a written respiratory protection program must be implemented meeting various government requirements! Some heavy duty stuff! Leads me to believe I bought the right one!
Assembling the respirator was otherwise fairly intuitive except for 1 small detail. Although it is probably stated somewhere, 4 particulate filters are included. They are compactly pressed inside their respective holders that snap on to the OV Cartridge. At a brief glance, it looked like the particulate filter housing just needed to be snapped onto the OVC and we would be ready to rock. One side kept popping off and found that each PF housing had 2 filters in it. Nowhere in the volume of instructional material does is mention to separate the PF filters, making sure to install only one per side.Read more ›
What really set it off is when I used it to paint. The first time I took off the mask after, I was caught off guard how strong the fumes were - I didn't smell a thing with the mask on. The true surprise was looking at the filters, which were covered in paint. Even after a couple hours of sustained use, I can take the plastic guard off to look at the backside of the filters - white like the driven snow.
I'll never generate dust or fumes again without this thing. No complaints really otherwise, it fits well, breathes well and doesn't pinch/rub/irritate my face or neck.

Excellent quality mask. I wear glasses and it didn't get in the way. It gets hot under the mask, but that's going to happen with any mask. Read morePublished 2 days ago by Lt. Frank Bullitt
