3M™ Particulate Respirator 8233, N100 is a disposable particulate respirator that helps provide reliable respiratory protection of at least 99.97 percent filtration efficiency against certain non-oil based particles. Soft inner material provides added comfort while the cup shape design makes the respirator spacious and durable. Adjustable noseclip reduces potential for eyewear fogging. Fully adjustable head straps help provide a secure seal. The respirator incorporates 3M’s proprietary technology with advanced electrostatically charged microfiber filter media designed for ease of breathing. This respirator is compatible with a variety of protective eyewear and hearing protection.
A Versatile Respirator for Many Work Environments
Recommended applications include foundry operations, grinding, petrochemical manufacturing, processing of minerals, and welding. Industries in which this respirator is commonly used include construction, general manufacturing, mining, oil and gas, and transportation.
Cool Flow™ Valve Keeps Breathing Cool and Comfortable
Fitted with a 3M Cool Flow™ Exhalation Valve, this respirator is ideally suited for work situations involving heat, humidity, or long periods of wear. The proprietary 3M Cool Flow valve is designed to release hot, humid exhaled breath quickly, helping to prevent an unpleasant build up of heat inside the facepiece - a significant cause of discomfort for respirator wearers.
Meets Government Safety Standards
This particulate respirator is NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) approved for environments containing certain non-oil based particles and provides N100 (99.97%) filter efficiency. Respirator helps provide protection against certain OSHA substance specific contaminants including lead, MDA, arsenic, and cadmium (excluding asbestos).
Importance of Respiratory Protection
Breathing hazardous particles can pose a risk to your health. NIOSH, a Federal government regulatory agency, has tested and approved the 3M Particulate Respirator 8233, which is designed to help reduce exposure to certain airborne particles.

I recommend the 3M Particulate Respirator 8233, N100(1 for $9.77) over the SAS Safety 8641 P100 Particulate Respirator (2 for $13.18), both sold by Amazon because :
(1)My experience shows that the filtering media outlast the 2 elastic straps, which wore out and no longer stretch to seal the mask to the face.
(2)3M's 2 spandex-like straps stretch better and last longer than those for "SAS". You put on the "SAS" mask on the face and then pull the 2 straps through the holes to tighten the seal each time. You do not have to pull the straps through the holes on 3M mask each time unless your face is sweaty (slippery). The 3M straps are much more elastic and stretchable.
(3)The straps on "SAS" mask wore out quickly and stopped stretching. 1mm long pieces of white rubber(?) fall off the SAS straps. The straps on 3M last longer and stretch better.
(4)You get more uses out of the 3M mask because the straps last longer than those of SAS mask.
(5)3M's black smooth soft silicone-like waterproof gasket provides a better seal, but it CRACKS and SPLITS easily into 4 to 9 pieces after about 10 uses. It slips easily on a oily sweaty face, in warm to hot weather, requiring pulling the 2 straps tight to keep it from slipping downwards to the mouth and pinching the nose.
SAS's grey cloth-like gasket absorbs sweat, does not slip as bad as 3M.
(6)N100 masks filter at least 99.97% of non-oil airborne particles. Not for use against oil particles.
P100 masks filter at least 99.97% of oil and non-oil airborne particles.Read more ›
In Beijing this was needed for most days and it was easy to feel the air we were inhaling was through the mask and not leaking from around the cheeks or chin.
Holds tight and forces intake through the mask.
allows exhale through the mask center exhale valve
did NOT fog up glasses when placed properly
No mask feels great, but this felt about the best
got a bit dirty looking. hard to clean
I would buy again.
BUT! as far as effectiveness goes, I'd give it 4 stars, giving me a compromise of 2. It's pretty solidly effective. The thing on the inside to make a seal is... well, odd, I guess. Not super comfortable for long periods of time, and clearly built for someone significantly larger than I, but probably effective for the average American male.
Not, however, for the small framed, small headed, glasses wearing women of the world.
A couple of caveats: You need to set the adjustable bands "just so," or else the mask might be too loose to be effective, or so tight that it will be quite uncomfortable. Also, be advised that you'll look a bit funny in it. A sense of humor will help you quite a bit here. And it's often helpful also if you take the inititiative to tell people around you what the mask is for, because otherwise they might think you're a Martian, or worse.
I see that currently this item is not available through Amazon. I hope that Amazon will soon make it available, because at present, obtaining the item in a timely manner can be difficult. You should be able to find the item for $10 or less without much trouble, but be sure you know the seller's shipping method and expected time for delivery. Once you know that the product works for you, it's a good idea to buy in quantity -- at least a few at a time. Each one would probably last a good long time, but you'll probably want to replace it with a fresh one sooner than you absolutely have to.
