The X-Series earmuffs are 3M's latest advancement in hearing conservation. New technologies in comfort, design and protection all come together in this groundbreaking earmuff line. The X5A earmuffs offer the highest NRR (31 dB) for an earmuff on the market which makes them ideal for very high noise situations. The high attenuation delivered by X5A earmuffs is possible as a result of a combination of advanced technologies including: newly designed spacers, specially formulated earcup liners and innovative foam contained in the cushions. The X-series (over-the-head) headband version is electrically insulated - sometimes referred to as "dielectric". The metal components of the headband have been covered by non-conductive material for use in a low voltage electrical hazard (less than 440 V ac). As there are no applicable standards for testing ear muffs against electrical insulating properties, the product has been evaluated at an external laboratory against a modified test method based on EN397:1995. During assessment, the leakage current did not exceed 1.2mA when the external surface of the product made contact with an electrical source. The NRR may overestimate the hearing protection provided during typical use. Hearing protection solutions made innovatively easy. The 3M Peltor X series earmuffs are ideal for protection against noise arising from a wide range of applications in the workplace and leisure activity. Examples of typical applications include: metal processing, automotive, airports, construction, textile manufacturing, chemical and pharmaceutical, manufacturing, cement manufacturing, printing, woodworking, heavy engineering, foundry, steelworks, mining and quarrying. Headband and headband cover/sleeve: stainless steel wire, TPE, polyester, polypropylene, acetal. Hard hat attachment arm: stainless steel wire, acetal, polyamide. Earcups: ABS/TPU. Earcup inserts: PU foam. Earcup cushions and cushion covers: PU foam and PVC. Black color. Dielectric. Hearing protection style: over the head. Noise reduction rating: 31 decibel. Product type: earmuffs. Size: one size fits most.
From the Manufacturer
3M™ Peltor™ X-Series Over-The-Head Earmuffs X5 are 3M’s highest noise attenuation earmuffs with a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) of 31 dB to help protect hearing in very high noise exposure environments. A newly designed spacer improves attenuation without excess bulk, or excess weight. When correctly selected and worn, these lightweight hearing protection products help reduce exposure to hazardous levels of noise and loud sounds.
High level hearing protection without sacrificing comfort
Specifically designed to enhanced worker comfort, these earmuffs combine a lightweight design with soft contact points and adjustability. The twin headband design helps reduce heat buildup while offering a good fit and balance to make the headband more comfortable. The wire headband provides just enough pressure to ensure a secure fit, but never too much so as to become uncomfortably tight. Individual wearers can customize the fit of these hearing protectors with the adjustable earcups that tilt. Soft and wide cushions help the earmuffs seal comfortably around the ears, a feature that potentially can increase hearing protection compliance by workers in environments where hearing protection may be required. Easy-to-replace cushions and inserts help prolong the life of the earmuffs and keep them clean.
Versatile hearing protection for many work environments
Suggested applications and worksites for these earmuffs include metal processing, automotive, airports, construction, textile manufacturing, chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, cement manufacturing, printing, woodworking, heavy engineering, foundry, steelworks, mining, and quarrying.
Electrically insulated wire headbands
X-Series Over-the-Head Earmuffs feature electrically insulated (dielectric) wire headbands. The metal components of the headbands have been covered by a non-conductive material for use in a low voltage electrical hazard (less than 440 V ac). The product has been evaluated at an external laboratory against a modified test method based on EN397:1995. During assessment, the leakage current did not exceed 1.2mA when the external surface of the product made contact with an electrical source. The user must determine the overall suitability of the product for the intended application taking into account any hazards other than noise for which the product is tested.
Importance of hearing protection
Exposure to loud noises can adversely affect the ability to hear over time. Wearing proper hearing protection devices can help in reducing the harmful effects of noise. Sounds levels are expressed in decibels, often abbreviated as dB. Higher decibel numbers indicate louder sounds. Typical decibel levels associated with common sounds include: outdoors with no people or traffic 20 dB, normal conversation 60 dB, power lawn mower 90 dB, chain saw 110 dB, and 12-gauge shotgun 165 dB. The hearing protector NRR can be used to evaluate different hearing protection options. However, the actual level of protection varies depending on fit, wearing time and other factors.

Very highly recommended!
If you are looking for something that provides moderate hearing protection-- either because the noise you have to deal with isn't very loud (low volume) or you actually want to hear a bit of noise through the muffs (such as while playing the drums for hearing other band members, or riding on a mower or using a chainsaw where you might need situational awareness for safety)-- these ear muffs might be overkill. These ear muffs are the kind best suited for a jet runway or a very loud manufacturing plant. They are pretty extreme and very, very quiet. I wouldn't wear then walking around the street or in a car.
I'm going to keep the pair I ordered and use them for studying and occasional use at the indoor gun range. They are well-constructed and very comfortable. The memory foam ear pads are great, and the overall shape is streamlined so they don't snag on things. They seem durable and like they'll last. I don't like that the acoustic foam in the ear cup is exposed without a liner, but I can always clean dust out with an air compressor. A couple other things to mention:
(1) They are a lighter grey than what is really pictured. Maybe it's just the lighting in the picture.
(2) They are BIG. They look ridiculous on. Then again, these are for function vs. fashion.
(3) Because they are big, you may have some problems getting a good cheek weld on the stock of your rifle if shooting.
Protect your ears and encourage others to do the same!
When i received this X5A i was shocked by how heavy it is compared to the L3. I went to the 3M website and sure enough the X5A weighs 12 ounces compared to 8 ounces for X3A and 6 ounces for X1A - this is one HEAVY earmuff ! It is also very deep. But that's how it manages the outstanding 31db NRR.
I compared the new X5A back to back with my aging L3 and sure enough the X5A murdered it. the attenuation of high frequencies was comparable, but when it came to the lows there was no comparison - the X5A was MUCH stronger in attenuation of the bass. i verified this by playing music on my DJ speakers while wearing both earmuffs. the X5A in fact is so strong that in a quiet environment it can get a bit uncomfortable psychologically. of course, there is no reason to wear them in a quiet room.
when i tapped on the side of the earmuff while having them on the L3 was very loud, but the X5A much less loud. this just confirmed what i already knew - the X5A has a much stronger, heavier, deeper shell, which also seems to be made out of a more non-resonant plastic.
but the shell is only half of earmuff performance - the seal of the earpad is the other half. and once again X5A murders the L3 here as well. the seal is OUTSTANDING. it is super soft, the shape is super smooth ( no square corners like the L3 ) and feels more like gel than foam - it is soft but substantial. it works amazingly well both for comfort and sound isolation.
the strong, deep shell combined with the soft yet substantial earpad that contours to your head combine to produce the outstanding acoustical performance of this earmuff ...
so why only 4 stars ?
1 - it is heavy. 50% heavier than X3A and it seems about 50% heavier than my L3.
2 ( and this is the important reason ) - the headband doesn't work properly. the earmuff tends to slowly slide down and i find myself readjusting it up. this may be because of how heavy the earmuff is, or because the design of the headband is flawed. the headband itself is very strong - just like he earmuff itself - the build quality of the headband is outstanding. but the design doesn't seem to work. it is extremely comfortable, but just doesn't really hold the earmuff in place - lets it gradually slide down ...
also it is hard to understand what people are saying in this earmuff. this is probably to be expected from a 31db NRR earmuff but it may not be what some people are looking for. i am NOT deducting any stars for this, but instead just warning those who may not realize this. it is noticeably harder to understand people in the X5A than it is in L3.
should you get this earmuff ?
YES if you want a high degree of protection from low frequencies.
NO if you want something that is light and / or small and / or cheap.
NO if you want something that will not interfere with your ability to understand speech etc.
NO if you want a headband that holds without slipping
so why am i still giving it 4 stars and not say 2 or 3 stars ? because overall the build quality and performance are truly impressive and went far beyond my expectations having previously owned Bilsom L3 which was considered one of the best. even the headband which in my opinion doesn't work is constructed spectacularly well.
i give X5A four stars because they set out to produce something exceptional and they hit most of their targets, failing on just one count, which never the less is quite important.
