3M Privacy Products
Featuring microlouver technology pioneered, designed and optimized by 3M to block side views so you see your screen clearly while people on either side see a vivid golden shield.
Privacy is the best policy
These days, screens are everywhere. And so are visual hackers. With the increase of mobile workers, open workspaces, and the migration of data to the cloud, computer screens can display private information virtually anywhere.
An unprotected screen can expose sensitive and private information, trade secrets and business plans. And the reality is, a visual hacker may only need one piece of valuable information to unlock a large-scale data breach.
A leader in screen privacy and protection
For more than 30 years, 3M has been advancing optical technology to deliver the gold standard in visual privacy. We remain a trusted global leader today—continuing to improve our technology, features and breadth of product.
Display and device technology continues to advance. So do we. Our privacy filters work simply and beautifully on most of today’s laptops to help protect your screens, and help keep the information on them private.
Behind the simplicity of our products is a powerful combination of optical science and sheer ingenuity you’ve come to expect from 3M. Rest assured, our products are inspected for quality defects, ensuring that you get authentic 3M Privacy Filters, with science applied to life.
Visual hacking: when information is visually captured without permission. But we’ve got you covered.
Gold standard in privacy
3M Gold Privacy Filters are perfectly suited for most of today’s high-resolution screens. Maintain optical clarity on your laptop screen while projecting a vivid golden shield to side views.
How privacy filters work
3M Privacy Filters block side views outside the 60 degree viewing angle, while providing a crisp, clear view to those directly in front of the screen.
A single microlouver is about as thin as a single strand of hair. There are thousands of microlouvers within one 3M Privacy Filter—all virtually undetectable by the human eye.
3M Gold Privacy Filters for Laptops attach with optically clear adhesive strips or easily removable slide mount tabs.
Find the right privacy filter for your screen
Step 1: Determine your screen type
Does your device have a raised bezel or a flat front glass screen?
Raised bezel: Screen with a raised frame around the edges.
Flat front glass: Screen with edge-to-edge glass without a raised frame.
Step 2: Measure your screen
For a raised bezel screen, measure the height (h) and width (w) of the screen's viewable area within the bezel.
For a flat front glass screen, measure the height (h) and width (w) of the entire glass display.
Step 3: Find your filter
Use the measurements to select the right sized filter for your device from the products listed below.
Best fit tip: If you don't see a filter that matches your measurements, select a filter that is larger yet closest to your measurements.

I'm on my second only because I forgot the first one somewhere (pitfall of removing it to collaborate with a coworker). The second package didn't include the removable mounting option I had in the first--just the one-time use mounting strips. The removable option is handy when collaborating in a conference room.
The gold color gets positive comments.
It does show finger prints badly, as well as starts to get marks from they keys when the lid is closed. I keep a microfiber cloth on the keyboard when I close it to stop the marking and to use when handling the screen.
This is the second privacy protector I purchased. The first one was a totally failure - another brand's black privacy product, with a lot of diagonal lines once put it onto the screen. Caused me dizzy and basically just couldn't work with it.
After conducting a bit research, I decided to buy this golden version of 3M privacy product, as I know that I need to have a product with good privacy protection but most importantly - allow me to view clearly from the front.
Overall, this product offers exactly what I was looking for thus very happy with it!
I'm attaching two photos for your reference. For privacy reason, I've covered the reflection of my room details. Still you can see from the photos that it provides a good level of a screen privacy protection.
To be satisfied, it's important to have the right expectations going in. I think all of us hope for a polarized filter that blacks out the screen for someone sitting next to us, but that's just not what filters can accomplish in 2016 (that I know of - reply with a link to a better product if there's one that is significantly better).
Here's what you can expect for privacy - with the filter on my screen (Yoga 900) and the computer set on the airplane seat tray, it will be very hard at __40% brightness__ for another coach passenger to distinguish content details without deliberately getting into your space. At 100% brightness, it will do little for you.
If you're in first class, where the passenger is both further away and at a wider angle to the screen, the effect is even greater, allowing you to increase screen brightness and preserve the same level of privacy.
The effectiveness of the filter is substantially impacted by the brightness of your screen.
People directly behind you, whether or not on an airplane, will be able to see things just fine.
So does it work? Sure, it does what it does, which is better than no filter at all if you're working on sensitive information. It doesn't mean you can stop caring about the guy next to you or behind you. If you want to work on private information on the airplane, your best bet is to sit in front of a bulkhead in a window seat.
If that were all, I would have given it four stars. Keep reading though.
Installation - pay attention to instructions and you'll achieve the expected results. Make sure adhesive strips go on filter first, not your screen. Wash your hands first and use the microfiber cleaner. No complaints there.
Touch screen compatibility - yeah, touch still works fine functionally, but..
The BAD - because of the adhesive strips, the filter is not sealed to the screen (as an InvisibleShield screen protector for your iPhone would be). This is okay until you start touching your screen, whereupon you'll start getting mottled greys and whites, as air gaps are removed between the screen and filter where you touch. Because the adhesive keeps a path in for air, you'll never achieve anything close to a consistent look again, condemning you to staring at blotchy grey bubbles, presumably until you take the filter off, reset it to the screen and remember not to touch it.
Mine also came with adhesive tabs to mount on the laptop screen, presumably allowing it to be removed easily at the cost of aesthetics, but also not putting any barrier between the screen and the filter. I tried this and still have the same splotchy results. This may clear up in a few hours but I'm not holding my breath. The attached photo demonstrates what I'm talking about. You may think you can put up with it for about five minutes, but you'll go nuts at minute six.
Because of this, I wouldn't recommend the filter to 2-in-1 or tablet users. Since it relies on the adhesive and clean surfaces, it's not practical to keep it in your bag and use it just when you need it. It's really designed to stay on, and if you touch that screen, you'll only suffer so long before taking it back off.
If you just have a normal laptop where you have no cause to touch the screen (and remember not to), it would work fine.
