For my Retina, I bought the glossy/matte 3M filter (not the gold model - and gold refers to the color, not the quality). This model is *really* effective if you turn the brightness down, but with brightness up to full, it's not really effective at all. Someone sitting on either side of you in an airplane will be able to read everything on half of the screen. You'll just need to know to turn down brightness when you need to turn up the security, and you'll definitely need to remember this because the filter cuts brightness by a lot. When you're not in a security-conscious area, you're going to have the brightness turned all the way up to compensate for the filter.
Other 3M filters get around this problem by using a slide-in-slide-out attachment method that lets you remove the filter whenever you don't need it. The Retina model, on the other hand, is attached with what amounts to kinda-sorta-sticky double-sided tape, and they include five sets of it. The directions say you can take it on and off "hundreds of times" if you keep it clean, and the package includes a plastic folder for storing the privacy screen when it's not in use.Read more ›
Looking at this screen (I'm writing this from my laptop) from 80 degrees, I can clearly see I am on Amazon. I would be able to clearly see any kind of website I might be on, email, or banking for example.
Installation was easy with two strips of adhesive that are supplied with the screen. Furthermore, the screen does not seem to hinder the sharpness of the retina display.
Regarding what the other reviewer stated about having to dim the screen in order for the product to perform, I find it unacceptable still. In order to get "blackout," I have to dim the screen to 1 notch higher than the display being off. The only time I work like that is in a dark room. Therefore, yes, this product is great if you will be using it in very dark rooms.
Overall, this was a poor purchase decision by me, and 3M is misleading everyone of you with the pictures that show the screen blacked out. I don't see any other options available on Amazon but I will surely keep looking for another solution, because this isn't it.
When installed with the embossed "3M FFMR15" branding on the top edge readable facing me (as opposed to backwards), the privacy filter is ridiculously reflective, causing almost any light source behind you to create glare on the screen. I installed the filter with the adhesive strips, but will probably switch to the tabs for easy removal when using my laptop in bright lighting. I have not yet tried flipping the filter over, it may be that its anti-glare property is on the other side.
Installation is straightforward, but it is easy to get air bubbles trapped in the adhesive strip unless you start at one end and carefully use a plastic card or similar to slide along the strip to press it down.
Privacy is good; the filter starts to obscure information at about +/- 45 degrees, but someone sitting next to you doesn't have to lean over very far before he/she can start to see information appear on the edge of your screen.
3M put a HUGE trapezoidal notch in the top center of the filter, presumably for easy removal, but it's about the area of the end of my thumb. Somewhat annoying.
Easy to install, fits like a dream and doesn't interfere with the camera, or the ability to close the laptop at all. Does a pretty good job of making the screen hard/impossible to read from the sides.
everything looks a little grainy after installing.
you lose viewable angle, but you're supposed to.
The one unintended bonus for me was by having this screen on my computer, I no longer am so worried about my kids touching the laptop screen. When you're two it's not easy to understand that some screens are touch screens, and some aren't. This privacy screen works as a finger/scratch/toddler/pet protection film as well.
