Bright and Vivid Reflection at Night
When the darkness of night obscures vision, 3M Scotchlite Reflective Tape can help people spot what is important to see. When you shine light on it, the light reflects back toward the source of the light, immediately alerting people to objects up ahead. It's advisable to place tape at a height where headlights will shine on it.
Help Alert Drivers to the Presence of Objects
This tape is commonly used to alert drivers about stationary objects such as fences, posts, walls, rails, mailboxes and poles. 3M also advises applying this tape to parked trailers, campers, RVs, boats and tractors.
Increase Visibility for People, Too
Reflective tape is also good to apply to clothing, bikes and helmets used in low light conditions. 3M recommends using the tape on both bike and motorcycle helmets. A seasonal use for 3M Scotchlite Reflective Tape is to apply to Halloween costumes. This tape will often help make you more visible to drivers in the dark. The tape conforms and adheres well over curves and contours.

Now I can see those numbers at night when I drive up from a long ways away just like a road sign.
I live on a country road with huge trees on each side, it is like driving into a tree tunnel and at night it is hard to see my drive way entrance.
Put up a new mail box, a huge one and wanted big easy to see numbers so it would be a kind of landmark and easy to see.
Everybody speeds up and down my road so you gotta come in hot at around 60 then hope another driver is not on your rear, so when you put on the blinkers and hit the brakes you got some one a few ft from your rear bumper. It is like running a NASCAR race then full braking and hard left turn without getting rear ended.
Now judging my braking point and exact turn in is so much more easy because I can see the huge mail box and huge numbers from over a hundred ft up the road, even at night.
I know some of the other reviews mention that the tape does not stretch well, but this was not my experience at all. I was able to get a perfectly smooth application stretched over a very curved surface. In this case, I started from the front and stretched and smoothed so that the tape adhered flat to the surface of the part.
Just be aware that if you stretch or pull the tape up after it is stuck down, it may cause some dark lines or marks in the reflective layer that are visible when you shine light. Just go slow and be careful to leave the tape stuck once it is down.

I added some of this to each bikes with one turn around seat stay, upper seat tube, and each front fork side. checking at about 50' with my car low beams, those applications of this tape added quite a bit of reflectivity. I gave each surface a good scrub down with 90% alcohol and the adhesive feels like it is very well adhered.
I bought this for my bicycle because I had seen photos of other people using it on their bikes. The photos were impressive but now I know it's because of the flash on the cameras being near the shutters. My opinion is that for bycicle safety at night, good lights are key. Reflective tape is OK but not completely dependable in situations such as a car with broken headlights, car coming at the wrong angle, ect. It is still somewhat useful on a bicycle, but I wouldn't recommend spending a lot of time making intricate patterns as I did on my spokes and other places. The tape has stuck onto my bike through a couple of drizzles but nothing more serious as I plan my outtings with the forecast in mind. The tape requires occasional cleaning to maintain reflectiveness if especially placed near the bicycle chains.
I think this product would be more ideal for stationary objects or large objects that otherwise would have poor visibility at night without this product. I think some examples could be mailboxes or trailers, although I haven't tested it in such a way.
Reflective surfaces are designed to reflect light in the same direction as it's origin, so you have to test it in a real world environment.
The adhesive quality is good, and there is sufficient flex in the tape to conform to shallow curves without puckering. It survived two weeks of 100+ and freezing temps, pouring rain, dust, and wind. It looks the same as the day I put it on.
However - after applying this to the back of my motorcycle cases, I asked some travel companions if they could see me shining like a sun, and they said they didn't notice it at all. Then after pointing it out, they made an effort to pay closer attention, and still said they couldn't see it. So I need to do more testing, and it's possible my top case is above their headlight level, although that seems suspicious. They also said they didn't see my ankle, jacket, bag, or any other commercially applied reflective surface, so I'm a little stymied.
All I can say at this time is that I've tested it with camera flashes and flashlights at distance and it is very reflective. I may need to optimize placement. I would advise everyone using this for auto-type applications to test with a vehicle and determine best placement.

A tooth pick size piece is visible as good and far as your eyes can see if you can shine something powerful enough at it.
True story.
