Editorial Reviews

2014 album from the super group. The Baseball Project, the critically acclaimed alt-rock supergroup featuring Peter Buck (R.E.M., The Minus 5), Scott McCaughey (The Minus 5, Young Fresh Fellows, R.E.M.), Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Linda Pitmon and Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate), deliver another batch of songs inspired by the great American past-time. This collection continues their tradition of inspired rock songs that provide passionately funny and sarcastically reverent commentary on the sport of baseball. And those who aren't fans of the sport can still enjoy the music, while brushing up on their knowledge.

I have to agree with reviewer Mike Shapiro; the other two albums by the Baseball Project were very good, but I think this is their best effort yet. You'd think that the band would have run out of baseball-themed ideas for songs by now, but that's certainly not the case. They song inspired and energized. This is a pleasing album in all aspects, but one that will especially appeal to diehard baseball fans.

As a lifelong fan of the Atlanta Braves I couldn't resist --- and break out into a big smile --- hearing songs about players such as Dale Murphy, Hank Aaron, and Pascual Perez (it helps to know the backstory of "Pascual on the Perimeter" --- what a hoot!), plus odes to players --- both obscure and popular --- such as Babe Ruth, Larry Yount (brother of hall-of--famer Robin), and Dock Ellis were fun too. Baseball lyrical content aside, the Baseball Project is a talented band, and musically, this album is also a joy. With R.E.M. dudes Peter Buck and Mike Mills, plus Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows) and Steve Wynn, (Dream Syndicate) on board, along with the talented "gal in the group", Linda Pitmon, the musical pedigree is of the highest order.

The CD is housed in a fold-out 4-panel digipack that includes lyrics to these fantastic tunes. As the band sings in another one of the album highlights "They Played Baseball" ... I'll keep coming back. Ready for that next game, err ... album, to be released.

The latest from The Baseball Project and as they say, the third time's the charm. Not that their first two weren't bad, but 3RD has the band tighter, the lyrics more fascinating, the baseball stories more obscure and thus more fun for the true fan, and production kicked up to high gear. Simply a great album.

Heard The Baseball Project on The Dan Patrick Show and decided to check them out. I am glad I did the music is fun about a topic that I am surprised that more artists have not written about more often.

Is there a rock n roll band that's more fun than The Baseball Project? I don't think so. I don't know that 3rd is better than either of the previous two, but I do know it's damn good.
