In 3rd Degree Secrets, we get to relive what it is like to be the odd girl out in high school. If you were not that girl, consider yourself lucky. For those of us who were, like myself, I feel like for our main character Kisten. She manages to get through day to day as anyone does in her situation. Even though her situation is a little different because she is blind in one eye, Kisten gets a little more flack from the other kids than most. She is not popular, not rich and but definitely very smart. Anyone that has been in high school knows this equals MAJOR HARASSMENT! Kisten's blind eye turns out to be more than meets the eye...(no pun intended..ok so yes it is)!!!!!
Luckily, Kisten handles all this as best as she can. She turns to the comfort of her pet rats when she gets home. *Again, I can relate. I had pets rats in high school. They were amazing! So sweet and loving. They honestly do make amazing pets!
This book is fast paced but not at a super fast, get lost and confused pace. The story line is so intriguing that I never stopped to eat while reading it. That was actually one of the messages I sent to Author Roni about this book. Her characters are SO REAL!Read more ›
D.E.A.D High is a brutal environment full of cliques, bullying, and seemingly teachers and administrators that are more interested in just getting to the end of the day than the health of their schools environment. I have to say if this is what high school is like these days I am so very glad to consider my self an 'old lady'.
Thrown into the mix is a remarkable young lady who is fighting every day just to make it to graduation, to do well enough to escape a difficult home life, to escape from a world of invisibility and heartache. Kisten, not Kristen, is seemingly just an ordinary girl, the kind of girl that doesn't get noticed unless it's to be ridiculed by the 'cool' kids, or made an example of by one of the teachers. She's always been the kind of girl that went about her day just waiting until she could escape from it all. Until the day the schools Junior/Senior best and worst list came out and her name was on it. Not only is she now getting noticed and not always for reasons she wants to be, but her secrets threatening to unravel around here and they aren't simple secrets, these are 3rd degree secrets, secrets that burn her right down to her soul.

Although some characters are recognisable from book one, this time it focuses on someone new - the intriguing Kisten - and her relationship with Blaine. An unlikely couple yet the 'she says/he says' style gives the reader an in-depth look into their personalities.
This story may be for the teenage generation, but it is written so well, in addition to the mystery/paranormal flavour, that it makes for a compelling read; regardless of age. It also demonstrates the mindset of the said teenage generation and, I would guess, help them address those tangled 'emerging into adult' years.
Themes such as bullying, difference, diversity, friendship, abuse and love, create an important book and the author does a brilliant job with plot and character development.
It will be interesting to see where the next book will lead - I hope there will be one.
