Les Misérables is one of the greatest literary masterpiece humanity has ever produced. Even when translated it can stand its ground against the likes of Dostoievsky or Dickens.
But when you read it in French, you realize V. Hugo doesn't operate on the same level : it's above litterature. You can read it, again and again, and never tire of it. This book can change your life.
Les Misérables is a work of such mastery that no review would do it justice. It just flows beautifully.
Furthermore, it gives people an idea of what it means to be French, as Les Misérables managed to put into words the very essence of France... Its many contradictions and its bloodied glory.
As a Frenchman who read this book in four different languages, I can assure you that Les Misérables is the most important book about France you'll ever read. One of the greatest works ever printed.
I realize that a great deal of people using amazon.com are from the U.S., and I'm also aware of the fact that the previous administration, along some influencial people (like a certain B.O'Reilly), have conveyed a skewed, absurd, retarded image of France.
Offering Les Misérables as a gift to someone you know has been brainwashed by this kind of disinformation might be a great idea.
If you have a few bucks to spare, just buy it. It's worth a lot more than its price.
