Andy Stitzer (Steve Carell) has bone 40 years without “doing it.” Now his pals are making it their mission to help him score…fast! Can he survive their hilariously bad advice? Will he land in the arms of the way-too experienced or the way-too-drunk? Or can he find true love where he least expects – from a gorgeous grandmother (Catherine Keener)? With both the Unrated and Theatrical version, The 40-year-Old Virgin on Blu-ray Hi-Def makes the pleasure last forever!
Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work on The Daily Show and in movies like Bruce Almighty and Anchorman--leaps into leading man status with The 40 Year-Old Virgin. There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humor and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (Clueless, The Shape of Things) and Jane Lynch (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (Lovely & Amazing, Being John Malkovich). And yet... something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm--and it's a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. --Bret Fetzer

This movie is about a guy who doesn't have much luck with women. So little luck that he's basically given up. Until his friends attempt to remedy this by trying to get him some action in repeatly misguided ways.
This movie is also for not only launching the 'Apatow' style of raunchy but reality grounded comedies, but the careers of several actors and actresses. It's always fun seeing a movie and seeing someone from this film. Lot of talent emerged from this film.
The moviegoer has a lot of heart in spite of the premise. The plot and characters are absurd, but still act like they are actually human, rather than one dimensional characters.
This is also a rather R rated film due to content. Quite a lot of nudity and adult situations abound.
This isn't a perfect film, and it's got it's tough edges, but it's still a fun watch. The characters and performances really make the movie great. And as such I'd highly recommend it.
ACTING: Steve Carell is a very funny man and he proves that he is more than a supporting actor with this role. He carries the role with ease and he does not steal the show from the other actors and actresses in the film. The entire cast in this movie is hilarious and Carell does not have all the funny scenes in the movie, and I'm glad it's like that.
BOTTOM LINE: It has character and it has some crude sex humour, it is hilarious. The end will have you laughing into the credits, and you will be glad you took the time to see it. I found this to be funnier than Wedding Crashers and an overall better comedy. It's a real standout when compared to the other trash that's in the theaters right now.
