Want to make your characters and their stories more compelling, complex, and original than ever before? 45 Master Characters is here to help you explore the most common male and female archetypes--the mythic, cross-cultural models from which all characters originate.
• Explore a wide variety of character profiles including heroes, villains, and supporting characters.
• Learn how to use archetypes as foundations for your own unique characters
• Examine the mythic journeys of heroes and heroines--the progression of events upon which each archetype's character arc develops--and learn how to use them to enhance your story.
Complete with examples culled from literature, television, and film, 45 Master Characters illustrates just how memorable and effective these archetypes can be--from "Gladiators" and "Kings" like Rocky Balboa and Captain Ahab to "Amazons" and "Maidens" like Wonder Woman and Guinevere. Great heroes and villains are necessary to bring any story to life; let this guide help you create characters that stand the test of time.

I'm currently using tips I've learned from this book on a current work in progress that has already been praised by industry insiders. I can't wait to see how they'll react after I've incorporated a few of Ms. Schmidt's advice into my work.
I highly recommend this book for beginners or those who believe they are "advanced." The truth is, none of us are "advanced writers." Regardless of our writing experience or success, every day we can choose to become better writers by adopting a humble, growth mindset. This book was written for that kind of writer, the ones who allow their characters and themselves to experience and conquer the path set before them.
It's not an exciting book, but it's excellent for character insights... those little things you may not have included, which will make your characters memorable and three-dimensional. You don't need to follow the "master characters" as a formula, but for character nuances, motivation, and insights, this is easily the best book in the field.
I'm keeping this book on my bookshelf with The Writers Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers, 3rd Edition and 20 Master Plots: And How to Build Them . These are among the books I double-check to be sure my story outline is complete. Otherwise, I may get to the middle, see it sagging beyond redemption, and... it becomes yet another unfinished book.
If you're developing characters, you need this book. As I said, it's not exciting reading, but it's essential.
I am really interested in character archetypes and this book cuts it. It is a great read, great conversation piece, and it really puts characters into perspective for budding writers.
Highly recommend.
Pros:
- Easy to read.
- Quick character guides that could be useful when someone just needs an idea to help flesh out a story without a lot of thought (or good writing).
Cons:
- Author's personal values too much on display. The reader is being soft-sold** very specific ideas on heroic and villainous traits and motivators.
- Characters seem more like stereotype than archetype all too often.
- Reminds me of my brief period of curiosity regarding the zodiac, reasons for which may or may not be clear to you if you read this book.
- Some readers will inevitably compare these characters to their own journey. Given the author's clear agenda, I find that unfortunate.
I cannot recommend this book. It might be useful for some, but really talented and practiced writers don't need it. It may actually make sucky writing suck more.
**I say "soft-sold" because this book puts values on character traits for stories but doesn't presume to be a life-guide, even though the author clearly knows that is how some will inevitably use it.
Too much of her own self comes through the information, mostly in the form of social justice dog whistles that became way too distracting for me. The characters archetypes themselves are only going to help those who have absolutely no idea what they're doing in the realm of characters and even then I would recommend finding an author that doesn't subtly inject ideology, whether consciously or unconsciously, into something fundamentally non-political: a medium of storytelling.
