About the Author
In addition to producing films such as R.I.P.D., Hellboy, and Mystery Men, he has also produced films based on several of his own creations, including The Mask and Timecop. Richardson owns a successful pop-culture retail chain, Things From Another World, with stores stretching from Universal's CityWalk in Los Angeles to his hometown in Milwaukie, Oregon.
Richardson has written numerous graphic novels and comics series, as well as Comics: Between the Panels and Blast Off!, two critically acclaimed books about pop culture. He lives with his wife, Karie, and their dog in Lake Oswego, Oregon.
Stan Sakai was born in Kyoto, Japan, grew up in Hawaii, and now lives in California with his children, Hannah and Matthew. He received a fine arts degree from the University of Hawaii and did further studies at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. His creation, Usagi Yojimbo, is the story of a samurai rabbit living in a feudal Japan populated by anthropomorphic animals. It first appeared in Albedo Comics in 1984. Since then, Usagi has appeared on television as a guest of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; and as toys, on clothing, in comic books, and in a series of trade paperback collections. In 1991, Stan created Space Usagi, the adventures of a descendant of the original Usagi, dealing with the samurai in a futuristic setting. Stan is also an award-winning letterer for his work on Sergio Aragonés's Groo: The Wanderer, the Spider-Man Sunday newspaper strips, as well as for Usagi Yojimbo. He is the recipient of a Parents' Choice Award, an Inkpot Award, multiple Eisner Awards, two Spanish Haxturs, an American Library Association Award, and a National Cartoonists' Society Division Award. Usagi Yojimbo Book 12: Grasscutter was used as a textbook in Japanese history classes at the University of Portland.

About the author

Sakai began his career by simply lettering comic books as he perfected his art and began working in the industry.
He also wrote and illustrated The Adventures of Nilson Groundthumper and Hermy; a comic series with a medieval setting, influenced by Sergio Aragones's Groo the Wanderer. The characters first appeared in Albedo #1 in 1984, and were subsequently featured in issues of Critters, GrimJack, Amazing Heroes and Furrlough. Stan Sakai became famous with the creation of Usagi Yojimbo, the epic saga of Miyamoto Usagi, a samurai rabbit living in late-sixteenth and early-seventeenth-century Japan.
Usagi Yojimbo, first published in 1984, continues to this day.
It progresses with Stan Sakai as the lone author and nearly sole artist (Tom Luth serves as the main colorist on the series, and Sergio Aragonés has made two small contributions to the series: the story "Broken Ritual" is based on an idea by Aragonés, and he served as a guest inker for the black-and-white version of the story "Return to Adachi Plain" that is featured in the Volume 11 trade paperback edition of Usagi Yojimbo). He also created a futuristic spinoff series Space Usagi.[10] His favorite movie is Satomi Hakkenden (1959). The Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles's Little Tokyo presented an exhibit entitled "Year of the Rabbit: Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo" from July 9 through October 30, 2011.
Sakai wrote and illustrated the story "I'm Not in Springfield Anymore!" for Bart Simpson's Treehouse of Horror #7 and illustrated the back cover of Treehouse of Horror #6. Sakai was the artist for Riblet, the back-up feature in the trade paperback of Stupid, Stupid Rat Tails. In 2013, Sakai illustrated the limited comic book series 47 Ronin, an adaptation of the famed story of the 47 Ronin written by Dark Horse Comics Publisher Mike Richardson and with Lone Wolf and Cub writer Kazuo Koikeas an editorial consultant. He resides in Pasadena, California.

The story that Stan Sakai tells closely follows the story of the Chūshingura and Sakai was clearly influenced by Inagaki's movie. There is a scene before Lord Asano commits Seppuku, where he walks through the blossoming cherry trees that is in both the movie and the book. This scene has always stuck in my mind for its beauty and sadness.
One of the themes that is stronger in the movie is the egotism of Asano. He is goaded and abused by Lord Kira. For a time he tries to put up with the abuse, but finally he snaps, he anger overcoming his control and he attacks Kira in the Shogun's palace. By the action he causes terrible pain for all of those around him.
If Asano were stronger, as strong as his 47 loyal retainers and his wife, the tragedy would not have happened. So part of the story to me has always been about Asano's weakness and flaws.
In enjoyed Stan Sakai's retelling of this complex tale. It was a change to revisit the story in the medium of a graphic novel.
If you know Usagi Yojimbo, a graphic novel written and illustrated by Stan Sakai, then you already know you'll love this book.
If you don't know Stan Sakai at all, or his previous work, but are looking for a great read, get this book.
If you just want to read a version of 47 Ronin, get this book.
