Okay, okay, in all seriousness, this light has a lot of bang for your buck, and has been a great help in getting a head start on the gardening season. The seedlings under my old, perfectly adequate, light were diving for this one; very impressive. The construction is sturdy enough to get the job done, and the hanger chains allow for plenty of adjustment. Very bright, and next to no heat. Shipped quick, and the bulbs were packaged securely. No complaints at all.
One tip for those planning on using this to start garden seedlings: With any light, no matter how bright, make sure your plants get a little bit of sun each day. Going straight from indoors to the full natural sun of a garden will often shock, or burn, plants -enough to kill them. A little indoor sun each day will allow them to adjust to full sun without issue. Learned that the hard way :(
In fact, these lights are bright enough that they run a little warm and have negated the need for a heating mat under my seed beds. I bought two of these to fully cover 4-5 seed trays. It seems that they may be bright enough that one would have worked instead. I had to add some clearance (4") and turn off half the lights using the convenient switches in order to reduce the temperature at my seed bed under 90 degress F. It looks like I will need to add some circulation and could possibly use the pair of lights to cover two separate sets of seed beds.
It has now been over a month, and all my seeds have sprouted. My tomato plants look better than they ever have. They easily look better than the commercial plants at Home Depot, that has never been the case before. They have thick trunks that are easily 1/4" in diameter and are at least as wide as they are tall, not leggy at all. My Basil is still small but is also doing very well. If you look through the pics you will see a couple of mine.
I used these lights for one season, by the end of which one bulb had "burned out". I took a season off and am starting my plants again this season. I ordered a replacement for the "burned out" bulb only to find out that it was not the bulb but the ballast, and after replacing the bulb, I now have two dead bulbs including the brand new one and the other connected to the same ballast.
So effectively the ballast lasted for one year. I bought two lights, each has two ballasts, so 1 in 4 has failed. Out of dozens of florescent fixtures I have purchased, this is the first ballast I have had failed on me and those others have been in service much longer. Now I need to buy a new ballast, not very happy about that but overall the lights have served me well.
Replaced both ballasts in one of my lights with this 4 light F54T5HO ballast:
Light is working great again and the one good ballast is a spare. Still disappointed in the original ballast.
Secondly, I would caution, as other reviewers have, that is does release heat. Now, this can be GOOD for keeping seedlings of hot-weather plants warm, but you MUST use a small fan to keep them from getting TOO warm, unless you have them in an otherwise cold location. I noticed that some of my seedlings (eggplants and peppers) toward the center area of the unit were dying. I finally tried putting the end of my thermometer in that area specifically, and found it was 104 degrees! No wonder seedlings in that area were dying! I got a small desk fan and put it on the low setting, and that's working quite well. Surface temperature in the center area is now only getting to a maximum of 90 degrees with the bulbs about 4 inches from the plants, and with ambient room temperature of 65-75 degrees.
Due to the heat issue, this light may NOT be good for raising cool-weather seedlings like lettuce and brassicas indoors. It could potentially work, depending on ambient temperature, and by using a fan. You could also keep the light a bit further from the plants (i.e. 6 inches instead of 3-4).
