I wanted to get a new range bag that I could use for years. I was carrying three different smaller bags and if I left one at home it was always the one I needed. I shoot both pistols and rifles at the range and I carry a lot of ammunition, tools, magazines and other items to the range. I looked at a lot of range bags and this was the highest quality one that I found. There are several knockoffs of this bag on the market but there is only one 5.11…..
I put together a comprehensive video to show the bag unloaded so you can get an impression of the size. I will let the video speak for itself and I hope it is helpful for you. I try to go over all of the details of the range bag and so far I love it. The only problem is that it is so large you can overload it and it will get heavy. Fortunately it is well made and robust and it has a very nice carrying handle on the bag to let you more easily carry it.
I go over all of the pros in the video so please take the time to watch it. The only two cons that I could really come up with were:
• The bag is targeted for pistol shooters and holds a ton of pistol mags but I also shoot an AR15 a lot. I wound up purchasing some nice AR15 mag pouches to carry on the inside but I wish the bag would also let you store rifle mags in the bag without buying more hardware.
• You cannot lock any of the multiple storage pouches and pocket on the bag. Since it is easy to carry multiple pistols in the bag and multiple magazines and ammo you are carrying a lot of money. Having the ability to lock the bag’s pockets would have been nice.
Overall this is an excellent bag and I rated it at 5 stars. I would buy it again.
The bag has ample storage, and in the large center pocket, I am able to fit multiple ear/eye protection sets, enough boxes of ammunition for an afternoon at the range, as well as a pack of paper targets and a factory pistol case for one of my Beretta's.
In the side pouches, I have more than enough room to keep my cleaning supplies (oil/solvent, patches & rods, bore snakes) with room to spare.
The front two pockets are also very large, and I can comoftably several pistols with attachments and anything else as needed, or whatever fits your needs as this bag gives a lot of options.
The rear compartement has eight magazine holders, and snugly keeps them in place during travel. There is also ample room in this pocket.
Overall I would certainly recommend this bag to anyone looking for a range bag that has a lot of storage, flexibility, and is well manufactured. This bag feels built to last, and I'm very happy with my purchase.
The Outside/Inside dimensions of the bag I received are: 23”/17” L x 17”/10” W by 9.5”/9.25” H. The bag retains its overall shape when open and unloaded making it very easy to use. Because the bag is flexible, there is some available play in the dimensions. The bag is, as expected, very light when empty. The small, embossed “511” logo is not visible from a distance; that was one of the things that made me choose this bag over one similar looking bag from a major firearms vendor.
The zippers are solid with pull strings, but are not designed to be lockable. The velcro closures are very precise and secure. The shoulder strap is padded and texturized – bottom line it seems to want to stay on my shoulder unlike many other bags. It is also the easiest to attach/detach that I have ever seen.
An answered question said the shoulder strap attachment tabs run all the way down and under the bag. That may be true, but I could not verify it with certainty because of the padding. If true that would minimize one of the major fail points . . . because this bag will be heavy when fully loaded.
The two side pockets inside the bag will each hold all but the most extreme pistols. A 1911 and a Ruger MkIII Competition with Aimpoint red dots mounted on top fit easily. Alternatively, two full size pistols (eg 5” barrels no optics) will fit in each pocket, one butt-up and one butt down. With pistols in the pockets and the inner bag removed, the bag also fit my Caldwell Pistolero rest fully assembled, 500 rounds of ammo, and miscellaneous stuff with room to spare.
The large outside pocket has a pistol pocket, 8 “mag” pockets (not loops), and some extra space for eg ~8.5”x11” targets. One centerfire or 2 rimfire mags or tools/pencils will fit in each mag pocket. 12”x18” targets can be coaxed in if folded in half. With a full size 9mm pistol, 10 mags, and 25 targets, the pocket outside looked the same as it did when empty and did not encroach on interior bag space. Note however that putting pistols in all pockets will eventually catch up with you lol.
The other double-zippered, not lockable exterior pockets are unremarkable. They will certainly hold ammo boxes of various sizes and quantities. The most notable thing for me was the two side pockets swallowed my ear muffs and a half-face mask. It's nice to have two dedicated pockets to keep these items clean. The water bottle holder can do that, or it can hold a can of D-wipes :)
The outside dimensions of the 3-compartment inner bag are 15” L x 6” W x 7.5” H. The compartments are velcro-adjustable and there are 2 zippered pockets that will each easily accomodate one full size pistol. (Note that maximizing the number of pistols in all these pockets will eventually smack you up against the laws of physics . . . the width and weight of the pistols themselves.) The single zipper on each pocket has no drawstrings; the bag has d-rings on the ends for shoulder carry.
At this point I am very impressed with the design, construction, and finish of this range bag. It's the first bag I've acquired that carries all my (pistol) range stuff with room to spare, when loaded looks just like it did when empty, and seems quite capable of lasting a while. We'll see how it works and holds up in use.
