When you can't even fit your drivers license (or similar sized CCW license) in one of them... I mean I can't even get my keys in there and I don't have many on the key chain... come on! Going to have to get a copy made and keep a single key in it I guess. I really can't think of anything else these pockets would be good for and looking at the overall design you can tell they could have been made a little bit bigger (even if just for ID/CHL).
Otherwise, great build quality. Great deceptively small size. Looks sporty and not overly tacticool. Their quick deployment tab design is superior to the others I've seen. Love how "difficult" it is to undo the belt clip (it's beefy and looks like it will stand up to the test of time, will not come undone on it's own either). Very easy to adjust to waist size.
If not for those silly side pockets, this would be an easy 5 stars (although maybe an additional front zipped pocket would be nice, looks just tall/wide enough for a phone).
Update/Edit: I was able to figure out a way to get my ID into one of the side pockets. It's hard to explain, but my advice would be to feel around inside with your finger once open to get an idea of the actual space available, as there is more above and to the side of the zipper itself. It might not be intuitive at first, but at least it does fit after all.
My only issue is that there was no product description on Amazon or on 5.11's site that indicated this would not hold my snub nose. It holds my 3.5" 9mm and my little .380 fine. So because of that I had to buy another one from HawkesPak which does hold my snub nose (I prefer my revolver depending on what I'm doing). The HawkesPak is completely adjustable, everything is high grade velcro inside so that you can adjust exactly where the gun is, how tight the thumb break is, angle, etc. I still like the 5.11 more though just because it has a smaller footprint, The HawkesPak is fatter. Both packs conceal well because they don't make it obvious that the two side compartments actually hold the barrel, both make it appear as if they are separate compartments from the main.
Cons. There's room for little else. There's only one large compartment. It won't hold a wallet or a cell phone. The two little ;pockets on each side are too small for even a driver's license or CC. Even keys with a fob would be a tight fit. This can be solved by adding pouches to the waist band but that's not ideal. I don't want to advertise the fact that I don't have room for these items in the fanny pack because it's filled up with gun. For internal retention, there's only two elastic straps. Might be enough for a semi but they arent suitable for a revolver so my gun has to sit in there loose. It definitely needs a more versatile retention system. Even a couple of strips of velcro would be a big improvement.
