UK-only five CD box set containing a quintet of re-mastered albums from the Goth Rock icons: In the Flat Field, Mask, the Sky's Gone Out, Burning from the Inside and Singles (a compilation of the non-album tracks excluding BBC recordings). This set also included the first official release of the rare cover of 'Spirit in the Sky' (originally featured on an ultra-rare fan club-only single) and the live-with-studio-vocals version of 'Bela Lugosi's Dead'.

There's no art reproduced except for the album front and back; this is clearly a BUDGET release. However, the overall sound quality is very high. I don't have the Omnibus versions, but this definitely sounds better than the earlier releases I have (and they even included the coda at the end of the Sky's Gone Out!) except for a few unfortunate mastering problems:
* "The Three Shadows Pt.1" has a tape glitch with the reel startup at the beginning of the track.
* Both "Watch That Grandad Go" and "Paranoia Paranoia" have a weird digital stuttering at the beginning. Sounds like a buffering problem during mastering... weird & unfortunate.
* The sequencing of the singles CD does not follow any discernible logic. It's certainly not chronological as it should be. I mean, the only reason to NOT put these in chronological order would be because you don't want to hear "Terror Couple Kill Colonel" (B-Side Version) immediately after listening to "Terror Couple Kill Colonel" (A-side), or "Here's the Dub" right after "She's In Parties"... But neither of those tracks are included here anyway.
Unfortunately some key tracks from the Beggars' catalog are missing:
A God in an Alcove (Flexidisc version)
Terror Couple Kill Colonel (Version)
1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy 3. Kevin Haskins 4. Daniel Ash
Party of the First Part
Here's the Dub
and of course the entire "Press the Eject and Give Me the Tape" LP, although the included version of Bela is a remix from the same source.
The first single (Bela Lugosi's Dead / Boys / Dark Entries) isn't included, as BB explained it would have made this collection more expensive to pay for the licensing. There were a few CD single pressings of that which can be picked up second-hand though.
Their limp cover of "Spirit In the Sky" is truly only for the most diehard completist.
I hope that there will be Omnibus versions of Sky & Burning, so I can unload this box set and have a more complete collection on CD. Meanwhile, I still have to hold onto my old Bauhaus CD's to have the tracks BB left out of this collection.
PROs: Sounds great, priced astoundingly low
CONs: Imperfect & incomplete
That being said, buy this from Amazon UK directly and you'll get it for about half the price. You can use your same login information and shipping really doesn't take that much longer. I rarely makes sense to buy UK imports on the Amazon US site.
