Editorial Reviews

After 6 turbulent years, Slipknot returns with one of their heaviest and most intense body of work - .5:The Gray Chapter. Stretching from grief to anger and beyond, the album touches on the most difficult period of the bands career and serves as a tribute to a lost friend and bandmate. Led by the ferocious "The Negative One" and the first single "The Devil In I" the album ranges from the raw moments from the bands self-titled debut and follow-up Iowa to the dynamics of Vol 3: The Subliminal Verses and All Hope Is Gone. .5: The Gray Chapter is classic Slipknot while remaining fresh and innovative and proves Slipknot continues to be the premiere heavy band of this generation.

Good but not my favorite slipknot. A few songs are almost childishly simplistic lyrical wise. I understand the mourning for Paul was needed and expected on this long awaited album but the whole problem with long periods between albums are that the longer people have to wait the more greatness fans will expect. Now I'm not trying to be that guy who is never satisfied nor am I the type of person who can't move on that always expects the same exact sound as whatever my favorite album happened to be... but regardless I have a opinion as we all will. For better or worse. With that being said the album is good... worthy of a knot album but I am looking forward to the next album where the need to mourn is over and they can get back to focusing on the music instead of the almost expected material that they had to release by personal mourning and fan expectations to do such on this album. You can easily hear that the pulse is still alive but I'd be a liar if I were to say that the absence of Joey Jordison isn't noticeable. There are usually just two band members that cannot be replaced in a band without losing a big part of that magic that made the band special to begin with. The singer and the lead guitarist but when you have a drummer as good as Jordison and that drummer is allowed to be distinguished then you just can't replace him without losing the bodies heartbeat. The new drummer is great... in his own way and rhythm but he's different and being so the sound is and hence the band is. As a 43 year old who has just enough experience and wisdom to be able to help others but still too too young to use it for myself my advice to the band is to get over your petty bickering and do whatever you need to do to reconcile the whole band as much as possible. First of all nothing is do-she-her (lol) than fans hearing about "hardcore" monsters of metal acting like spoiled millionaires throwing temper tantrums over which millionaire gets what cut of the pie. Let me tell you what... you are all playing with fire. Be smart and learn from history. Let me remind you of what happens to bands who changed the ingredients. Guns-n-roses?? Together they were huge...separately they all suck. Van Halen... with David Lee Roth they rocked...they were the flagship of a generation of young rebels who helped inspire some metal bands greatest. After Roth? Van Hagar? Lol.. they inspired a generation of yuppies. Don't inspire yuppies guys ....get yourselves together before it's too late.

I pre-ordered this album and was able to download The Devil In I and The Negative One ahead of the full release date. I was beyond impressed with these tracks and was interested to see what I was in store for us on release day. Was it going to be a mix of heavy songs and slow moody songs? Was this going to be some good songs mixed in with a bunch of whiny, emo lyrics?

    It is neither.

This album sets itself apart from the earlier releases while still maintaining that Slipknot attitude and sound. It is incredibly heavy and aggressive and I must mention the lyrics multiple times because they are outstanding. This album lacks nothing....musically or lyrically. I read an interview by Corey Taylor a couple of months ago where he stated this album would be heavy but also moody. This album is supposed to be a culmination of all the feelings and emotions the band has dealing with the last few years...especially with regards to the death of Paul Gray.

While Slipknot certainly has reasons to put out an emotional, angry, hostile or even an emo album... they chose to release this album. It is emotional, it is angry, it is hostile and all of these emotions are put in their proper place amongst some great musicianship and amazing lyrics. I have always been a fan of Corey's writing style but the lyrics on 0.5 are on a new level. You can feel the anger and the pain these guys have felt in a musical package so well put together it can stand against any so-called "emotional and meaningful" album in any genre.

Simply put...this album is amazing! Every Slipknot release until this point has had tracks I love and a few I can live without. I have listened to it from start to finish many times over and I love every track. I am in no way a Slipknot fan boy but they have outdone themselves with this release. Every track holds its own on this album and every track deserves your full attention. While it does have its moody parts, those parts do not take anything away from the rest of the album...they only compliment it. The moodiness is presented in a real and mostly aggressive manner and this album is never emo in any way.

    0.5 is raw...it is emotional...it is heavy...it is real.

    Buy this album.

Great hardcore album to listen to
  • Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2014
I don't know where to begin. Simply stated: this is an amazing CD. I started listening to rock/metal when I was 13 years old (year 2000, a bit before Iowa was released). I was in love with Mudvayne and Slipknot at that time. Since then I have migrated to heavier bands such as Behemoth, Meshuggah, Aborted, etc, etc. For me, Slipknot became an afterthought about 5 years ago. Then I heard "The Negative One" a couple months ago. I thought that song was great...but then I heard "The Devil in I" and was floored by that song. I've been eagerly awaiting the release of this CD since then.

So, here we are now. Slipknot is back and I feel like I'm in middle school again. I'm in love with this CD. I wouldn't hesitate to say that this is the most well-rounded CD they've created. Yes, it is unfortunate that Joey is gone...but I can't say that I miss him. The drummer did a fantastic job filling into his role. The percussion, samples, and guitar-work are amazing as well. Corey's vocals are on point in this CD. He sings a fair amount, but not overly much. The growls and screams are perfect. They really did do a great job of blending all the best elements of Iowa and Vol. 3.

After just a few days of listening to the CD...my favorite song would be "Custer" (see review title~) followed by AOV/The Devil in I/Killpop. I can't wait to see Slipknot live again - I only got to see them once (at the first Mayhem Festival in 2008, the first concert I ever went to). If you've ever liked Slipknot then just buy then CD now. I would rate this CD 10/5 if I could.

6/10 Punkte.

10/10 Punkte

Be prepared for Hell - Ist son zwischengeprängel nichts besonderes meiner Meinung nach SKIP ....... 5/10 Punkte.

10/10 Punkte.

If Rain is what you want - Fängt ruhig an baut stimmung auf wirkt erst ganz unscheinbar aber zum ende bricht er total aus! FETT
    9/10 Punkte.

Override - Bonus song hoar gefällt mir net ganz so dolle weiß ehrlich gesagt nicht was ich dazu sagen soll. 5/10 Punkte

5.0 out of 5 stars Un bon retour de Slipknot
Reviewed in France on November 13, 2014
