Having read and thoroughly enjoyed TEN YEARS, it is a pleasure to return to Richard’s short stories. In this volume the states and years are Idaho 2003, Connecticut 2005, Utah 1992, California 2019, Arkansas 2019, Michigan 1975, Washington 1971, Colorado 2020, Pennsylvania 1990, Nevada 2019, Alaska 1982, Iowa 2016, Virginia 2012 and so on. Becker captures the flavor of the atmosphere of each locale, spirit, and year, mastering the importance for rapidly setting a tone for his brief but highly competent stories to develop a terse but fully illustrative short story about our challenges in this world, now and in history. Becker’s polished skills prove consistent in each of the stories. His position on the ladder of rising authors appears assured. Recommended. Grady Harp, August 22
Richard R. Becker is an award-winning writer.
His debut collection of experimental and speculative fiction short stories we have in this compilation began as a project to write one story a week for 50 weeks. He continues to expand these stories for a second collection, and expects some will evolve into larger works.
When he is not writing fiction, he is a creative strategist for Copywrite, Ink., a 30-year-old strategic communications firm with clients that have included government agencies and Fortune 500 companies.
Is active in the global community and teaches at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He enjoys a broad range of activities, including travel, hiking, exercise, photography, and illustration. These experiences influence his writing. He is an observer of daily happenings and creates stories around general impressions of everyday life on many levels.
Excerpt:
"This station is filled with stories. Triumphs and tragedies. People coming home. People leaving home. People finding fortune. People tempting fate."
His impression are clear and flexible, with short introductions, character-sketching and people on the move. The stories are organized per chapter with a place name of one of the USA states at interesting locations and timeline of the happenings. Events are based on struggles, relationships, respect, successes, historic and sub-cultural background, of USA environmental settings.
He would develop some character, showcase his resourcefulness, and fortitude — salt-of-the-earth qualities.
Attention is given to communication, building the pillar of the encounters — on the move and casual encounters of strangers, to demonstrate the values of life, pain, disappointments, and negative influences. The author manages to reflect his own values and capacities in the conversations among his characters. He becomes his characters in different walks of life, acknowledging the good and bad influences.
These are short stories of people on the go with a moral compass, some abiding and some not. Very entertaining.

This book can't really be pinned down into one particular genre, as it's story has it's own setting and theme. Some of them are humerous, some are very calm and cozy while others pull at your heart.
This was my first experience with this author and his writing and I really enjoyed it. The stories fit very well together and once I started reading, I didn't want to stop.
The stories talk about different stories from different years and settings. The author took the time to introduce the different timelines with popular niches from the time so that readers could relate to the stories better. In this novel, Becker shows us a mastery of rapid tone development coupled with vivid descriptions.
Besides good character and plot development, Becker maintains consistency throughout all the stories. The stories come from fifty states and present us with interesting facts to chew on. There is much more in this book to learn from than merely assuming it is the same as the rest. The author uses ordinary people to convey a powerful message to the people.
50 Stares is worth the time and the money you put into purchasing, and I strongly recommend this book to anybody who wants to read something fresh.
Along these pages, you can learn about different customs, ways of living and about a variety of cultures, particularly related to America's continent. I love the setting of many tales.
The bit that I liked the most was the way the author comments on these people and how he depicts the places. I felt as if I were in America, wandering along the country. Some stories are riveting, others a bit sad but they leave a message to readers. This is definitely a book for different tastes which I highly recommend.
