About the Author
W. Cleon Skousen is best remembered as a popular author, speaker and teacher who lectured in every state and province in North America, and in more than 60 countries world-wide. He was a student of history and a scholar of law, specializing in the principles of Freedom, the U.S. Constitution, economics, and ancient history and scriptures.
He was invited to write a new constitution for Canada and the proposed United States of Latin America, and he published a model constitution that could be adopted by nations everywhere. He served in the FBI for 16 years, four years as Chief of Police in Salt Lake City, and ten years as a university professor. He was a prolific writer and produced three national best sellers, The Naked Communist, The Naked Capitalist, and The Five Thousand Year Leap. Eight of his books were used as college texts, and several were translated and published in other countries.
Dr. Skousen was born in Canada, and returned to the U.S. with his family at age ten. He spent two years in Mexico, two years in England, graduated from San Bernardino College in California, and received his juris doctor degree from George Washington University Law School. He was admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia and before the District Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court.
His seminars on the Constitution have been taught to several million across the U.S., and among his students were dozens of U.S. Senators and Representatives, two Supreme Court justices, and several candidates for President. He believed knowledge and understanding were key to maintaining a free country, and spent his entire adult life opening up complex issues for deeper understanding by students and audiences all around the world.
Mr. Skousen and his wife, Jewel Pitcher of San Bernardino, California, are the parents of eight children, 50 grandchildren, and more than 120 great-grandchildren. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Is the book important? If we consider that from prehistory to the last 250 years, mankind's lot was nasty, brutish and short. Beginning with the roots of the American Revolution, through the Revolution to present day, mankind has grown to experience the most wealth, health and freedom ever. Obviously, any exposition of principles, practices and procedures which contribute to this leap is important.
While the author uses quotes quite liberally, he uses them within the statement of, definition and explanation of principles, rather than a rah-rah patriotic monologue.
I believe this book is enjoyable reading for people of all ages, for me it was a bit of nostalgia for my civic/government classes. I definitely recommend it as summer reading for Jr and Sr. High School students. Statists, atheists and transfer payment recipients may find the book biased in the statement of principles, but I found it in keeping with other books from history, economics, law and religion.
Apparently President Reagan once stated that this book should be required reading in all of America's public high schools, and I couldn't agree more. It reminds and/or educates the reader in a simple and clear manner of the principles that were used in the founding of the USA that broke the mold from the tired, old, monarchy and personality-cult ways of other societies.
It shows that America became great because its leaders recognized that good government isn't conjured up by a bunch of cloistered, bow-tie wearing ivy-league grads (no offense to those who are), but by its very definition is a messy process that involves everyone - with some key controls. Not controls of one man over another, but all men possessing the sense that they have an ultimate accountability to the Creator for their actions. Having a representative democracy instead of raw mob rule. It highlights the fact that good government is not only a structure and set of laws, but the perspective and attitude of those involved with it, down to the last citizen.
"The 5000 Year Leap" is great reading for any American, especially for those born since 1990 and those born in other countries. These aren't "tired, old ideas" as some would have you believe. They are timeless ideas we haven't looked at for a while.
Gives you a fresh perspective on what could be possible in this wonderful country of ours, and for other countries as well. Would be great if it became part of a regular assimilation program provided free of charge for all of the hopeful immigrants coming into this country. We'd have a lot fewer problems and heartaches if more folks internalized and lived these ideas.
