Detecting improper wiring conditions GFCI receptacles, the tester is designed to alert you of probable improper wiring conditions by using indicator light patterns (reference guide included). The GE GFCI Tester is for use with 110-125VAC GFCI outlets. Consult the GFCI manufacturer's installation instructions to determine that the GFCI is installed in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications. Operational instructions included. Helps with quick review of properties

I am a rehabber, and one of the biggest hurdles in estimating work on a property, especially an older one, is what the electrical is going to cost. If the place has Knob & Tube, we know right away how to estimate that. But some people over the years have replaced their two-prong receptacles with grounded receptacles; except that there's really no ground at the box. And those same people frequently swap the hot and neutral lines.

Now I am able to walk through a property (usually vacant) and test 90% of the outlets in an instant. Just last week, we went through a property with 100% grounded receptacles and only 2 of them were actually grounded. If we hadn't caught that and figured a rehab price without it or worse - never tested it - we would have been hit with it at inspection and forced to change out all the wiring in the place. Within the space of a few minutes, this little guy saves me thousands.

We are adding some outlets to our kitchen and in the process of doing so needed to figure out which outlets are controlled by which breakers. We decided to do something we should have done years ago, which is to map out the entire house. We now know which breaker needs to be turned on/off for every outlet and every light throughout the house. We created a spreadsheet with all this information and then also wrote with permanent marker on the breaker panel.

Okay that's the back story but what does that have to do with this tester. This tester made the above process really easy. Rather than drag a lamp or some other electrical devices from room to room to see when the electricity went off as we switched breakers on and off we simply plug in the tester. It worked perfectly for this. In the process we also discovered two outlets that needed to be fixed.

The only minor complaint would be the yellow looks more like orange than yellow. However, it's clearly different than the red so there was no problem distinguishing between the two colors. The white "empty circle" really just means the light is off.

Simple device at a great price and well worth the money for what we needed.

I wish there was more information on that the lights mean on the device it self instead of on the box it came in but whatever. This is still a great tool.

Performs the job perfectly

This tester does exactly what it's supposed to do. Unlike some reviewers, I did not have any problem reading the lights. The values matched up with my expectations according to how I knew my outlets were wired (and confirmed with a multimeter).

As noted elsewhere, if the ground is not connected for your GFCI outlet (which is allowed by code), you should not expect the test button on this tester to trip the outlet. That is not a failure on this product; receptacle testers will only trip the GFCI outlet if ground is connected. The test button *on the outlet* should always trip the circuit if properly wired, so if your GFCI does not have ground connected, you should only rely on receptacle test button and not the tester test button.

Simple, inexpensive, no issues

Just plain works. Instructions are clear. I can't find anything wrong with it, certainly not the price.
Some people have been complaining about difficulty to read the panel on the device. It's not been an issue for me. Besides, if you have done your job right, you would only get the two right-most lights on every time (good wiring and ground).
Of course it's not just a GFCI tester. It tests any three pronged outlet and provides a view for how it's wired (such as, is the ground circuit open, or is the neutral mixed up with the ground, etc). That's super valuable even if you don't have a GFCI. And if you have a GFCI you can test that it actually trips by pushing on the button. That's added value, but not the main course.
Nothing wrong so far, let's see how durable it is...

A useful tool for many of us

It is good to have this tool on hand so that you know if things are wired properly, or grounded or not, even if there is no obvious problem. And, of course, if an outlet fails you can pretty much diagnose the problem right away and decide on what you are going to do about it. If you are buying a home, you can go around and check the outlets to see if things are amiss. If you find a couple of mis-wired outlets likely there are other problems.

This tester also does GFIs and that is important because those do indeed fail because of surges, ants (yes), etc as they are full of electronics and even moving parts. Often other outlets are wired through one GFI and so there can be a whole chain of non-functioning outlets.

Now that I have tested my house, it will sit in my electrical tool box, waiting for a call to duty. One of my kids has a badly wired newish house, so I'll take it down there when I visit next.

For the price, especially, this is a dandy device and I wish I had bought one years ago. It is essential for homeowners, even for those who choose not to do the actual repairs themselves.

Some complain because the little chart is hard to read. It is. In dark places you might want to bring a flashlight with you.

also tests the GFIC to make sure they operate correctly.

I'm color blind and you can read the result of this as it matters what lights are on NOT what color they are.

a must have tool for the home electrician

This a must have tool for the DIY'er. It has a solid build and works as expected. I'm changing all of my outlets and switches to the Decora style and use this outlet tester repeatedly. Given that outlets are not always on the expected circuit breaker for the room, this tester provides a convenient way to check if the outlet is still alive. On one occasion it also correctly indicated that the original outlet was wired incorrectly, so I was able to detect and fix it.
