What I like about this stuff is that you don’t have to mix it! The mix already has a special blend of fast setting cements, sand and gravel. All I needed to do to set the posts was pour the mix into the hole until it was about ¾ full and then pour in a gallon of water. That’s it!! My holes were pretty wide and deep because I was using 4x4x10 beams, so each hole took an entire bag of concrete mix. I didn’t have to mix in the water or anything in the hole, the water just seeped it and did all of the work.
The temperature outside was about 80 degrees when I was setting this up, so the mix set pretty fast. This is definitely quick setting mix; the beams were self-supporting in only about 5-10 minutes, so no one had to hold them up for long which is great. I let these cure and set over night and by morning my daughter was able to use her new bar!!!
I was very happy with the results and will use this brand again for small jobs like this. I’ve never worked with cement before so I was a little nervous to try it, but I was pleasantly surprised with how easy this was to use.
However I wanted fast set for colds days, below 40 degrees F, but it just will not set fast and after more than 18 hours it started to harden for finishing. Doing a 7x10x4” slab: mixing started by 8am, bull float by noon – did not set until 7am next morning and baby the slab all day and all night long too.
Other than the fast set has a little more butter (cement) and smells differently, I see no advantage between fast set and regular concrete 80 pound premix for $3.29 during cold days. So save you money.
Works great and fast set during warm days though.
