In conclusion, if you are needing a portable external storage solution with fast read and write times, it is well worth investing in the WD My Passport SSD.
Other than that it is a great product - super fast transfer speeds and it comes in an amazing size. Overall, I'd still recommend this product.
This 512GB SSD drive is essentially the same size as the drive already in my Mac Mini. Because it comes ready to go as an external drive there's no need to purchase any cables or enclosures to use it. It will work for both Mac (High Sierra and El Capitan) and PCs (Windows 7, 8's and 10) too.
The drive comes with a USB-C and an adapter for USB-C to USB-A. Backwards compatible to USB 2.0 it is USB 3.1 compatibility rated.
The drive does come with WD Discovery software for backup and security installed. To use this as a boot drive, users will need to format (erase) the drive prior to installing their own computer's operating system on the drive.
The drive is very small and lightweight. It's in a shock-resistant case that probably would be OK if dropped a few times from 3-4', but I'd not expect it to be abuse-worthy. It does get warm on the silver part of the drive case, but not hot to the touch. It is powered by its connection to your PC or Mac - there's no external power source needed to power the drive.
The drive has a 3 year warranty through Western Digital, with the serial number on the back of the drive which is needed for registration.
The drive can reach speeds up to 540MbS, but that will depend upon how the drive works with your existing system. The Mac Mini I have didn't reach those transfer speeds with a core i5 processor (2.1Ghz) and 16GB of memory, but I didn't expect it to. I was pleasantly surprised by the boost in speed over the internal hard drive though.
Using BlackMagic Disk Speed Test app, I had speeds of 71MbS write and 73MbS read with the internal hard drive. Using the WD My Passport SSD I was able to get 370MbS write and 420MbS read speeds. A fantastic leap to 5-6x's faster speeds overall using the WD SSD!
Boot time was also cut in half using the USB connected SSD (USB 2.0 connection) versus the internal drive.
I'm very pleased with this drive. It's compact size, speed and the ease with which I was able to upgrade and bring new life to an aging Mac have me singing this drive's praises and looking to buy another one.
Highly recommend this drive for anyone who wants a speedy connection or a way to boost the performance of their Mac Mini.
It will disconnect itself with the slightest move of the laptop, and come back with a message saying the the drive was corrupted or just stop coping.
Software is annoying and prompts every hour to check for updates. Returned
Top international reviews
I purchased this SSD drive when the price was in excess of £600 (2TB version) for video editing and design work. I found the speed of the transfer of data to be excellent.
Having read other reviews about the long length of the cable to be an issue, I had to agree. As the drive itself is so light, the long cable meant the drive moved about a lot and was difficult to position when used with a laptop.
After a few weeks the drive started to disconnect by itself, which is incredibly dangerous for data. The problem got progressively worse, sometimes the drive wouldn’t mount at all.
As I use the drive for my work in progress (I’m self employed and have no server to work on) I couldn’t risk the loss of files, so I decided to buy a second identical drive, to then try formatting the original one to see if that resolved the issue.
To my horror and delight, I found that the same drive had dropped in price by around £200 in that short time!
As soon as the new drive arrived I noticed the new drive was supplied with a shorter cable than the original. I transferred all the files to the new drive in batches, carefully checking each and everything copied properly, which it did. I then reformatted the original drive, but that made no difference, it still kept disconnecting.
After a lot of trial and error I found that the supplied cable was actually at fault, even though it looks perfect and has been treated with the utmost respect.
These drives come with a very respectable three year warranty. After contacting SanDisk (who actually make these drives) they told me the cable isn’t covered by the warranty so I now have to purchase a new one. Poor show in my opinion on such an expensive item when the supplied cable is clearly not fit for purpose.
-- IN CONCLUSIONE --
It’s made from high quality materials and seems very sturdy in construction.
I use it for photo editing and transfer speeds have been respectable but nothing special.
The only real issue is the fact that the provided USB-C cable is built in a way that makes it proprietary to this hard drive. This means it cannot be used with other devices.
I bought it to pair it with my XBOX ONE X, with the aim of being able to shorten the loading times of the games.
Inside the package you will find the small SSD, the cable and a USC type C -> USB 3.0 adapter
Once connected it was immediately recognized by both MacMini and XBOX.
Loading is wonderfully fast (up to 540 MB / s).
It is not the first SSD I use, another SSD is installed in my MacMini, also Western Digital, from the "Blue" series.
As I said in that review, the MacMini is reborn.
However I can anticipate you that the loading times of the games have HALT.
So I recommend it to all those who work with very large files or software, which require quite long loading times.
Excellent transportability, you will not feel the weight of this SSD inside your bag at all and will also take up very little space on your desk.
The manufacturer's 3-year warranty is the icing on the cake. Symbol of the seriousness and professionalism that has always distinguished the Western Digital brand.
Have a good day and good shopping.
In common with all storage manufacturers, the capacity is base 10 which in human numbers = 1TB, whereas computers work in base 2 which in IT world = 0.95 TB. Hence the difference between what some people might think they are buying compared to what the computer shows it as (there are plenty of published articles discussing the difference, and has been practiced by all manufacturers for many years). 5% does not affect what I want to use it for.
Copying 80GB of VMs from laptop (Lenovo T540p, SSD, USB 3.0 port) with the 3rd party cable, to this external drive performed at over 230 MB/s. This is satisfactory to me.
