Remember the name Leylah Attar. I was twice given a recommendation to read her debut novel, 53 Letters for my Lover, so I knew this book must be special. Although the novel seemed to be relatively unknown, I didn't hesitate to purchase it and begin reading. I am so grateful for those recommendations because I can honestly say that 53 Letters for my Lover is a noteworthy read.

This novel is essentially a series of 53 love letters written to Troy Heathgate. Spanning over three decades, these letters form the 53 chapters of the book. Shayda Hijazi shares her life and her beautiful love story with Troy, including events from her life when she lived in Iran. The novel begins in 1995, when Shayda is 33 years of age, but throughout the story, she reflects on events which take place at different points in her life. This novel is intense. If you are sensitive to adultery or rape, you should carefully consider reading this novel. Although adultery and rape are uncomfortable topics for many people, Leylah Attar handles this story with grace. If you love angst or stories about forbidden love, you are probably going to love 53 Letters for my Lover.

Shayda is the daughter of a wealthy Persian family, sent to Toronto, Canada with the expectation that she will be married. Her family will then be able to follow her to Canada. During a small dinner party, Shayda is introduced to Hafez Hijazi, and two weeks later, he proposes marriage. After another three months, she is married and living with Hafez and his family in a one-bedroom apartment. Shayda marries Hafez out of a sense of obligation. As a Persian woman in an arranged marriage, Shayda longs to experience love.

53 Letters For My Lover is a poignant, emotional and love story, showing both the painful and beautiful sides of love. The combination of Leylah Attar's beautiful writing and the intensity of the romance is why you need to read it. Troy and Shayda's love story spans nearly twenty years and Leylah Attar had me hanging on to Shayda's every word as she told us her story.
Somewhere in the fabric of all these years, our lives got tangled, like unruly threads pulling and snagging into impossible knots. How could we have known that one night would stay with us so long? I remember it like it was yesterday.

Shayda moved to Toronto from Tehran, Iran in the midst of the country's revolution. Now in Toronto she has very little except an arranged marriage with her future planned out for her and the promise of a new start. Bound by the ties of her culture, she marries someone she doesn't love.
"Are you happy, Shayda?" A second. That's all it takes. A single beat of hesitation on my part.

Shayda's husband, Hafez, is a good man. Before I started the book, I thought that maybe he was going to one of those overworked and cold men who made no time for his wife or children. But that wasn't the case; he cared about his family and he wanted to do right by his wife. He was just a little too late. Due to his own pain, he was never able to physically and intimately show Shayda the kind of love that she needed, that she wanted. Hafez's goodness was part of what exacerbated Shayda's internal turmoil and guilt and complicated her decision to either stay with her husband and her two children or leave it all for the man she loved.

Troy came into Shayda's life very quietly, but his presence made a lasting impact on Shayda.

First time I ever read a book by this author ,I was very impressed with her writing talent and storyline. She is a excellent writer , you can just read it in the words she uses , highly talented. It's me though with this read , I'm very impatient when it comes to my love stories ,I don't mind anticipation but I'm not happy when it takes decades for the happy ever after to start..Its just my issue so that is why this book is a 3 star for me .The waiting for this couple to finally live their lives together took way too long , but if you have the patience for waiting out a story that I don't than I think you will enjoy this well worded love story.

This is one of the most poignant reads I've had this year and if I could give it 6 stars, I would. This book is unique in the merging of the Persian and Canadian cultures and it is told over a 20 year time span, right up to contemporary times. I know little about Persian culture but I enjoyed and learnt from the snapshots afforded throughout the book. Shayda is Persian, beautiful, exotic but expected to marry once her family ensured her passage to Canada. Hafez is her husband but there were secrets she wasn't ever told. This first 30% of the book gripped me with its grim reality and the feelings it evoked in me. Troy is Canadian and someone who pops up in Shayda's life.

Troy and Shayda, all drawn to one another. When they were together, it was like magic, incomparable to your average love story, but when they were apart, it was achingly painful. These two had me in knots, thinking obsessively about the book and I almost couldn't bear to continue.

"You're dangerous. And you leave bruises. And your words disrobe me, and your kisses destroy me."

I needed some hand holding to progress, but I am so glad I continued. What these two go through in their lives is gritty, difficult but quite wonderful.

"I lift the bed sheet over our heads, letting the light filter through the soft cotton, while we hold hands in our private little fort."

I couldn't ever predict what was round the corner for these two, their families and where the journey would end. I am captivated by the story that Leylah Attar created. Her writing is seamless, exotic and conjures every scene so perfectly in your mind. I cried after closing the book, not during the book. The emotions evoked by this read leave me in admiration of this experience and the characters.
