Product Description

IDEAL 61-025 Volt Aware Non-Contact Voltage Tester indicates presence of voltage from 40-1000-Volt AC. This tester has visible and audible indications of voltage. It also has a green LED light that indicates whether the power is on or not. So your battery doesn't die in the middle of an important job, there is a low battery indicator so you don't have to worry about its charge. In 1916, J. Walter Becker started the Ideal Commutator Dresser Company of Chicago from his mother's kitchen. He manufactured commutator dresser stones with the belief that every product should be worth more than the price paid for it. Service, he said, was part of the product. That idea has been the core IDEAL business principle for over 90 years. Today, the many loyal distributors and customers that make IDEAL successful are a testament to Becker's original philosophy.

I received two of these things as a gift:

What I like:
- It lets me know when something is live, no issues there
- I like the green light for safe/dead wires, and the red-flashing-beeping for hot/live wires
- the beeping is also a plus, with the option to shut it off
- Used it everyday for a year, no battery issues

What I don't like:
- Stupid design where you twist to turn it off or on. Between the ON and the OFF position is the release for the battery compartment. You stop twisting between the ON/OFF to separate the unit. The battery compartment is also spring loaded, so now anytime I go to grab it out of my leather holster I keep it in, the unit separates, and I have to dig out the batteries and tip from the bottom. It appears with constant use, and dust on the jobsite, that the thing has become very easy to rotate, so it comes apart every single time I go to take it out of my holster. I can't use it anymore.
- I had the little black plastic button come out as well, and I keep the thing in a sturdy leather holster.

Verdict:

If you just need something very clear and easy to read, for occasional home use, this thing will do just fine, but if you need it everyday on the jobsite, look for something else.

-I've used better, i've used worse. -This one leans toward the worse,... if you get anywhere near voltage it comes on, sometimes. -I guess my number one complaint is it seems inconsistant. -My old 'Micronta' tester had a red light that got bright as you got closer to voltage... it was much more reliable & sensitive. I'm an industrial electrician, and with that tester you could tell 60vac, from 120vac, from 480vac by the distance away and the brightness of the light. -not this tester, it just buzzes as an on/off indicator, and worst of all, it sometimes will not indicate voltage on a cord depending on the insulation, if you rotate the cord it will go on and off,... not very sensitive. -Also, it is very fat, fatter than most majic markers, and heavy. -Awkward in a shirt pocket. -This tester seems to have only one purpose, stick it in an outlet to sense voltage yes or no,... for that it is adequate, anything more, inconsistant.

-I usually like Ideal products, but they missed the mark on this one. -Find another one,... and let me know, 'cause i need a better one.

This is very useful. I would recommend all contractors have one of these in their tool belt. It may save your life! I'm serious. I knew a guy who got electrocuted and he didn't have one of these. Now he has to deal with a lot of medical care and forced retirement. Don't trust another contractor's word when he says the breaker or electricity is off. Test it yourself.

This tester is small enough that I carry it in my shirt pocket. It's great insurance, insuring that I got the correct circuit turned off prior to working on it. It's a needed tool for every pro/DIY'er that works in the electrical or maintenance field. After misplacing this tester for a number of months I locally purchased a Fluke voltage detector. Now don't get me wrong it worked well but, when you tried to turn it off sometimes it was off other times it stayed on. This little tester is far superior to the Fluke with its twist "On & Off" switch. I did find my "Ideal" tester a month or so ago now needless to say the Fluke is in my tool box and the Ideal is in my pocket once again.

I received the product yesterday, and put it in my coat pocket so that I could use it on the job at work today. I keep my utility knife and sometimes a set of pliers in there. Depending on what I'm doing maybe an adjustable wrench or a screwdriver. At lunch today, I emptied my pockets, because I wanted to look at the NCVT. The tip was loose, coming right out of the yellow plastic that holds it. I thought maybe that I could just push it back in and it would click or latch in. Nope. After toying with it for a couple more minutes, it came apart in my hands. It works, kinda. The little button that selects whether it beeps is now missing.

The pity of it is that it is the right size and shape. Uses widely available AAA batteries. It would be highly functional if it were more durable. But it's broken after 5 hours on the job. Junk.

I really like this unit, I call them "tickers." I have had 3 of them now and only replace them due to their ability to grow legs on a crowded jobsite. It has the perfect preset sensitivity and is easy to turn on and off with one hand if your other hand is busy holding a box cover or device. Batteries last virtually forever too.

This tester does exactly what its suppose to and does it well. I'm not sure how it stacks up against heavy duty testers but for the DIY'er you can't go wrong with this.

Far better than Fluke's. No-nonsense power on that is glove-compatible, clear green power indicator, loud beeping and flashing red light when detecting power.
