Now that I'm married with wife and kid, they take up most of my time, so the above setups have become impractical and inconvenient.
However, I'm pleased to report the sound quality from bluetooth headphones has substantially evolved when mated with the proper format. As my previous audiophile setups sounded great with CD's and lossless music, the BTS pro sounds perfectly matched when used with steaming services such as Apple Music, Spotify in addition to mp3's.
I have tried several bluetooth earphones/headphones and the BTS Pro audiophile-like quality with the ability to tweet the sound to your liking with incredible battery life.
Pros:
1. Amazing sound quality
2. Long battery life
3. Decent wireless range
4. Sweat Resistant
5. Useful companion app
6. No audio lag when watching movies,
7. More comfortable than in-earphones buds.
8. Compact and collapsible, folds into your pocket or included case
9. Beautiful quality case
10. Good for making phone calls in a non-windy quiet environment, or car with the windows up.
Cons:
1. Not as comfortable as lush oversized cans for extended wear
2. Stock EQ may sound a tad bright with some tracks or genres
3. Plastic folding joints seems flimsy and unsure if they will last
4. You have to keep adjusting the position of the headphones on your ear until you find the sweet spot for optimal sound quality.
5. Phone calls are unclear to the person on the other end, while in noisy or windy environments.
The following is an in-depth explanation of the pros and cons.
SOUND SIGNATURE
Note: you must continue to play with the positioning of the cans, while on your ears until you find the sweet spot.
These sounded amazing when used with my iPhone 7 Plus and streaming Apple Music across all genres. The sound stage is wide with good instrument separation and lush forward vocals. Substantial but non-over powering bass response. With movies and certain tracks where I want a little more "oomf", I simply apply a bass boost from the firmware EQ via the companion app.
There were a few tracks that sounded a bit bright, and I could hear a bit of hiss. The treble/highs frequencies can be a hair much. Again, easily adjustable. But I prefer the brightness for the most part, and it can sometimes reveal interesting nuances in your music.
Sometimes when pausing the music observing a short period of silence when switching between apps, you can hear hissing. It doesn't bother me much. The quality of sound more than compensates.
COMPANION APP
The app is actually useful. Although the EQ spectrum of adjustability is limited, they focused on the proper frequencies in which it may be needed, thus making these cans virtually adaptable to suit anyone's liking. I prefer the stock sound, with occasionally turning on the bass boost. This is coming from a purest who doesn't like toying with EQ. They did it right. Additionally, you can also update the firmware.
I think the "find your headphones" app feature is mostly useless; you can make your cans beep loud, so you can find them, but they must be already connected to your phone via bluetooth. The portion that utilizes GPS to determine where they were used last is ok.
COMFORT
I am not a fan of jamming small earphones into my ear or having to do some kind of anal origami to get them to stay on. Thankfully these wrap around your head, effortlessly. Although you do have to play with the positioning to get optimal sound quality. I'd have to say they are more comfortable than in-ears, but not as much as plush oversized cans. However, this is not much of a con as they're clearly advertised as an active phone. But practical and frugal me, still doesn't want to have multiple cans for different purposes. Also, you can't lay down with these, which drives me crazy because they sound that good, and i like to watch my shows in bed.
BATTERY
OMG, with all that amazing sound, comes amazing battery life. I've gone through long periods of not using them and they run great without having to recharge them.
CONSTRUCTION
Having mentioned not having to charge them often, brings me to the next part. The flap that covers the USB-C port is difficult to open. This could be fixed if they designed the flap with a tiny protruding ridge or tab (maybe a 1mm in size as not to take away from the aesthetic). This would allow you to pinch and pull open the flap with ease. As of right now, you need long finger nails to squeeze into a virtually non-existent gap to pry open the flap door.
As i mentioned previously, the plastic joints leave me skeptical about the longevity of these cans. I question how many times you can collapse and unfold them before they snap.
PHONE CALLS
Yes these are advertised as active headphones, therefore noisy environments should be expected from the intended demographic. But for my uses, making phone calls is on the low list of priorities. Calls sound terrible in those conditions. However, if the person in the receiving end has difficulty hearing you in a quiet environment, check the mic hole to insure there's no obstruction, like lint. I have yet to find a part of wireless cans that can deliver clarity in a noisy environment. Again, they sound fantastic in the car and in quiet places.
Despite my lengthy criticisms, I consider these essentially perfect for my needs. The pros outweigh the cons by a large margin. Whomever tuned these cans has a true passion for music, and it's evident. They sound good enough for an audiophile to consider leaving his tedious inconvenient setup without a blink of an eye, or the feeling of compromising on audio quality.
They aren't cheap, but they aren't overpriced. You're getting more than your dollars worth with sound quality and versatility. If you're looking for that hidden underground gem that no one knows about, look no further.
While I can appreciate that everyone has slightly different anatomical parameters, which undoubtedly will produce some variability in individual comfort, it should be noted that my head viewed from the top is untypically round, not the more common oval shape (longer front to back). This suggests the distance from the back of my head to my ears is actually shorter than what is characteristic of most people on average. Thus, I would have expected these headphones to have spanned the distance to my ears without any significant issues, yet I find that they must be precisely placed in order to be correctly situated directly over my ears. If I didn't exercise considerable care with their physical placement, I would lose a good deal of its most appealing qualities, that is overall sound quality and clarity, as well as extraneous noise isolation, all of which became significantly degraded. When placed well, they do afford a realistic stereophonic effect of above average frequency range and overall sound quality for a sport headphone, and there is little noise intrusion from the surrounding environment. I use headphones to listen to NPR while walking, which is mostly the spoken word, so clarity without intrusion from environmental sources such as traffic noise is extremely important to me. So, repeating my opening statement, the sound quality I've experienced from these headphones is superior to any other sport headset I've owned. I just wish I could tolerate wearing them for an extended period of time. Unfortunately, I'm unable to wear them for the time required to finish my daily 4- to 5-mile walks without developing severe discomfort that becomes nearly unbearable, which severely limits their utility. If that were the only issue, I would still return them for a refund. Unfortunately, in my case, it was not the only issue.
I wish to divulge that I ordered a "Used - Like New" Amazon Warehouse Deal and received flawed headphones... Though my past experience has been that such deals are often customer returns for reasons other than quality, thus affording the purchaser with a lower-cost option, this was not such an experience. The headphones were damaged to a degree that impaired their utility. The ear cushion pad on the right side of the headset as delivered was completely detached from the plastic supportive housing, calling into question just how comprehensive Amazon's inspection process might be when processing a returned item to be restocked in its warehouse. I do not know the source of the damage, whether it eluded the manufacturer's initial quality control or whether it was subjected to misuse by a previous purchaser. It's impossible to tell. Though it didn't prevent me from checking out the sound quality, the physical damage makes the headset totally unsatisfactory for extended use. As a result of the above, this headphone set is going back to Amazon.
A Note about Durability: The above calls into question the long-term performance of all 66 Audio BTS Pro headsets. One would wonder if they are durable enough to remain intact over a long period of use or if there is a high failure rate. I queried owners through Amazon's "Ask a Question of the Community" function to ascertain if others have had longevity issues. If I receive answers suggesting further comment is appropriate, I'll add to my remarks here later.
An aside regarding Amazon Warehouse Deals: This isn't the first time I've received a damaged or malfunctioning product as a result of ordering an Amazon Warehouse Deal, especially when designated "Used - Like New" or "Used - Very Good." Past experience suggests that items designated "Used - Good" followed with the notation "may have some cosmetic damage" often are, in fact, not physically damaged at all. There appears to be a practice on the part of Amazon to create a low level of customer expectation to guard against disappointment in the case that there exists some minor imperfection. By contrast, those designated "Like New" or "Very Good" may not actually have been tested for functionality but only be cleared for resale on the basis of cosmetic appearance, much as possibly those judged to be of lesser cosmetic condition routinely receive some other designation. It's entirely possibly that all such items judged "Like New" or "Very Good" may have been returned in a condition that, from all outward appearances seem to be undamaged and, thus, pass cursory visual inspection to be placed back in Amazon's inventory stream. However they may have, in fact been cleared for resale without actually having been tested for the presence of functional deficiencies. It is important to add that the above is simply speculative on my part, as I cannot say with any degree of assurance if my conjecture is accurate. It does, however, reflect my personal experience ordering numerous Amazon Warehouse Deals over several years.
I'll likely continue to order Amazon Warehouse Deals because they afford me with considerable savings when it all works out as I'm sure Amazon intends. The inconvenience caused by the necessity of returning some items and reordering similar items again is insufficient to prevent me from advantaging myself of the lower cost when available. One must be patient if one considers this practice acceptable to whatever advantage and realize this is part of the process. Fortunately, Amazon accepts returns from its Amazon Prime members at no additional cost, so I incur no monetary cost other than the inconvenience of lost time and effort, which I consider to be minor. I recommend them to anyone wishing to avail his or herself of the potential savings.
