The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens has an excellent focal length range that includes the longest focal length found in a Canon zoom lens - 400mm. This long focal length and focal length range combine with very good image and build quality to make the 100-400 one of the most popular serious wildlife and sports lenses Canon sells.

It's handy to have the wide focal range... though it's a bit heavy, focuses a little slow, and is a bit loud when focusing.
However, if you're a newbie, and want to have a lens that will give you more options than the Canon SLR kit lenses (14-55), this may be a good starter option, especially b/c it's so inexpensive. If you have a bigger budget and can afford something more, I'd save for a Canon lens. Better build and image quality.
I take pictures of my daughter at her soccer game with it and I've also done some nice lunar shots at night with it. The quality is good and I can't complain. With an aperture range from 4 to 5.6, it's not bad and I've also gotten some great portraits with the lens.
I highly recommend it if you aren't making money shooting pictures and you want a nice wide focal range.
It's great for the price and that's about as far as it moves. Speaking of moving- The lens is extremely loud and very slow. Do not take this to a sporting event and expect to capture a split second in time. It simply does not move fast enough. This lens is pretty satisfactory for street photography, but please don't purchase this with the intention of getting any 5-star Sports Illustrated cover shots.
Will work for you if you shoot stable objects with your camera on tripod.
5 stars for the price, 0 for the speed and quality --> 2 stars.
