About the Author

Dudley Pope, a naval defense correspondent of the London Evening News, progressed to writing carefully researched naval history. C.S. Forester urged Pope to try his hand at fiction and saw the younger writer as his literary heir. Pope began what was to become an impressive series with Ramage (1965) and, over the next 24 years, produced 17 more novels tracing Lord Ramage's career. Pope died in 1997.

These convoy engagements on the Murmansk route are a mystery to most, and the one described in this book was perhaps the most amazing and decisive of them all. The author weaves the naval tactics and engagement descriptions with the strategic/political climate to show how a defeat here crippled the German surface navy.

Very good book. Informative, action packed, and gives a picture if a part if WWII that is often overlooked. This sea battle changed the face of the battle if the Atlantic, and altered.the course of war.

Great description of sea life in the arctic and the battle

I bought this book because I had worked in the Barents and spent a fair amount of time as sea up there. It is a fascinating read and very well written and documented. I did find the British English description of things a bit confusing so I had to look a few words up in a slang dictionary. The book was written in the 50's and so the language has marched on a bit since then. What is particularly interesting is the description of how the battle ragged at times down to the individual volleys of fire. Also there are several nice diagrams showing the position and course of the ships at the time of fire so you can sort out how things worked.

If you have not worked up there in the cold and dark it might be hard to relate but for me, I found very well described and an accurate description of life at sea under those sea conditions. Fortunately today our ships have more space and better accommodations and most importantly GPS and Radar.

Amazingly detailed account of human resilience in war time

I read 'Battle of the River Plate' by this author when I was in my teens over 40 years ago. It impressed me that much that I read it twice and I hardly read any books at that time in my life. I discovered this book by accident, after a google search looking for information about my dad's time in the British navy during tha war. I did a search on the name of the Destroyer that he served on - HMS Orwell. The book is so well written and detailed that reading it, was almost like being there at the time. I couldn't put it down until I got to the end. I wish I'd known about this book before.
