Lots of interesting and thoughtful sayings but there is no organization to the book. If you are looking for a saying to use, it is very hard to fine one about a particular topic.

I picked this book up in 2003 when I was going through an extremely hard time. I have other quotation books that are better organized and easier to navigate; however, what I liked best about this one was that I could open it up to any page, at any time, and find something to focus on, something that would make me feel better. I wrote it in, made marks and underlined sayings that were especially helpful. Nearly 10 years later, this book has traveled thousands of miles with me and I still pick it up from time to time when I need a reason to smile, or something to think about. It's fun to look back at the things I've underlined over the years to see how far I've come in my journey.

I love this book! Daily I read just a few pages to inspire me and sets my mood for the day to do things more wisely. One sentence quotes from Proverbs, to saying heard you heard growing up. This is a fun book to keep in your car to read in traffic or in a bathroom setting. A great gift for those that might be feeling down.

The words are so helpful and you can open it to any page and there will be a message for you. I bought 3 on Amazon as used. Two were OK and the third one was not as advertised but it's no big deal. I gave them to my nieces as "survival for life" and they had their noses in the book right away. It is the duty of the aunt to pass along knowledge to nieces so this is perfect.

This book is a small, but thick, compendium of proverbs, aphorisms and sayings--some of which were familiar to me, and othes not. A perfect book to flip through while waiting for an appointment, or if too tired to read anything substantive, but not yet tired enough to sleep, "8,789 Words of Wisdom" hits the spot. If you can resist marking your favorite sayings as you peruse this book, then you are a better man than I am, Gunga Din.

The clumsy Kipling reference brings me to the only negative aspect of the book which is that few of the words of wisdom in this book are attributed to their authors. Granted, some sayings have been part of a culture for so long that attribution might not be possible, but a line from Kipling's famous poem, "If" (which appears in this book) is not one of them. It disappointed me to recognize the words of Franklin, Emerson and others without their authors being recognized. That said, the book cost me only a few dollars, and if I'm so interested in finding the sources, then I easily can search them out myself. Barbara Ann Kipfer in any case explains their absence, as she jotted down sayings in a commonplace book over a period of years, and is simply transcribing that for readers. It is not a scholarly endeavor, and readers should not expect that of it.

What they should expect and I believe will enjoy is the serendipity of coming across aphorisms that seem to be meant just for them. Many such uncanny moments arise in paging through this book. As other reviewers have noted, the sayings are not topically or thematically organized. I say so much the better that this is not some miniature Bartlett's. "8,789 Words of Wisdom" is something fun, and may you enjoy this book as much as I do.

I love that there are so many quotes in one book. I feel inspired when I go to each page. There are many quotes that will seem fitting to each and every one of us, no matter what life throws are way. I'm sure this book will always be enjoyed no matter when I open it up.

Really cute book! If you ever hit a bump in the road you can just sit down and read a few quotes from this book. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because my copy's first page was all wrinkled but the book is still very good.

I think you need to be in the right frame of mind to appreciate this book. i happened to be feeling very open and free when i picked it up and it really touched me at times, and still does.

However, had i been in a bad or closed off mood, i probably would have thought it was trite and amateurish.
