Fast forward to a few minutes ago when I attempted to do the same thing. I connected dongle and antenna, connected to to my PC. It appears that I was connected my wireless network, but I couldn't reach anything. So I decide to disconnect it and check the wire... broken... it's now stuck in the dongle and I'm out $22.99 after one use.
Pros: No configuration required. I simply plugged it in and it was recognized right away. Movable antenna makes it easy to position it in a comfortable position (I am using it for a VM on my Microsoft Surface Pro 2).
Cons: The only complaint I have is that it can be bulky sticking out of the side of my surface. I would probably go with a cable attached option if I could purchase again. I normally use my laptop on a table or desk.
Writing this review connected with this so if you are reading this, it works.
So that is the most important thing, it works. I unpacked it, screwed in the antenna and then went to the Alpha website for drivers. I had to google the model number because as you can see, the address is not the most obvious.
Downloading the drivers was interesting because you get directed to [...] free file sharing site. Apparently keeping down costs is important. The Mac drivers were for 10.3-10.6 but there was a warning that the Snow Leopard drivers did not work. I attempted to instal them anyway and was rewarded with a working system. But the software does in fact fail randomly. While it was working, I could see that this little thing has some serious range and pulling power. Instead of the normal 3 networks visible (2 mine, one next door) I got 8, one of which I know is over 300 meters away. Not bad.
Now for the bad part. This thing looks pretty fragile. Tomorrow I am buying a short USB extension cord so I dont have this plugged directly into the port. And it has a very annoying blue light to tell you its working. Black tape will solve that.
I have tried it with and without the antenna and in the house it works fine without an antenna.
Overall, Im very happy. I have wireless again and when I retire this machine I can hang on to this as a backup. Always good to have plan B!
January Update - After 4 months of use and abuse I managed to break my first one. When I got a new one it was MUCH more sturdy from day one. I think I got a bad one right off but I still mistreated it so I am not blaming it for breaking. The USB extension cable is a must.
I see there have been others do same, one posted after I got mine in January also so maybe specific to a batch. Since it is past 30 days there does not seem to be a way to get resolution or replacement but wish I could, this came highly recommended in a class I took last year plus I purchased the huge antennae extender.
