I have used many desoldering tools over the years but this tool is really great! I have only owned this tool for a few days now but have already put it through hours of hard use and can tell that this guy is going to do the job very well!
There are a few features that make this tool really nice......................
The first really nice thing is that everything is balanced very well, it looks like it would stress your arm and wrist out but that is not the case at all, it is very light.
The second thing that makes this tool very nice is the vacuum pump itself, it uses a double diaphragm pump so there is very good suction with no pulse and constant vacuum. It also appears that a ball bearing was used to connect the pump connecting rod to the shaft of the motor which will last much longer than sleeve style bearings,
(Note: this is not confirmed about this gun using a ball bearing).
The third thing is that the tips seem to last a long time unlike some of the other cheaper soldering tools I have used. The replacement tips are not too expensive and you can get different sizes as well which is another great plus.
The fourth thing that makes this tool very nice is the fact that you have access to every part of this gun which will make maintenance very easy, the back housing is removable to expose the diaphragm pumps and connecting rod if there is ever a need to inspect or repair the pump.
The only concern I had after buying this tool was if the gun was going to be too bulky to get into some of the tight places I have to work in but so far this has not been a problem at all. (Note: extension tips are also available, I bought one of these in case I run into this problem in the future.)
I am very happy to own this tool and highly recommend this product to other people. IT IS A GREAT TOOL!!!
it's been over a year now, and it still works great!
it's been 2 years now and I have to put this in the "one of the best products" list
I bought mine back in February 2013 and they were significantly less expensive at that time. Nearly half the price. I'm not sure I'd buy one for what they sell for now. They can't be that expensive to make. Anyway, other than the price being a bit of a ripoff now, I have nothing but good things to say about the gun itself.
UPDATE: I see now why the price was going so crazy. These appear to have been discontinued. Whoever had the last few of these in stock was jacking the price up. Now they're showing as unavailable.
Manual plunger tools don't work well at all. I've also tried desolder wick which doesn't work very well either. So after having used those in the past I always have a smile on my face when I go to desolder now. It's actually kinda fun, whereas it used to be a miserable chore.
The first thought I had when I saw this gun was that it looked like it would be bulky and hard to work with in close quarters. But the reviews helped put those doubts to rest. And I've been perfectly happy with it. It's well balanced and, while hefty, it's not heavy.
The gun and all the accessories are very well made. I'm curious if they're still made in Japan like mine was. As long as I'm careful not to drop it I expect to get many years of service out of it. I think the pump will probably be the first thing to go. It's good that it comes with some extra consumables like filters, recovery chamber, etc.
I took some scraps of cedar wood I had laying around and made a stand for it. I posted a photo but it got deleted. The stand is something I recommend whether homemade or store bought. It's not very safe leaving one of these laying on it's side as I'm sure many people do.
