After a little bit of use:
Pros:
the dpad thumb button is great and heavily useful for controlled scrolling\browsing.
The scroll touch sensor between the front buttons is well implemented.
Cons:
This is a great first try but missing the mark on a few points.
The backside of the mouse is bit overly pronounced compared to most mice making long term use feel awkward.
The buttons on the front are probably a little too far forward. This might be a me thing as I tend to be a claw style mouse user.
Probably the biggest complaint is the base dpi seems to be set too high and I don't see anywhere to adjust it.
Probably could have added a bit more of the base 8bit controller aesthetics. Like putting the controller sticker pattern across the top and maybe having 8bitdo in nintendo font on there somewhere.
The access panel for the battery\usb dongle is quite stiff. I already can see stress marks in the plastics from trying to pry the panel open with just my fingernail. Not good if you need store the usb bit between location and dont want to leave it plugged in to your laptop.
All in all I want to love this mouse but it just falls short of the bill for me while I still think it useful as full solution for other folks.
An uncomfortable, angular nostalgia piece that works great
A lot of other reviews say the buttons are small and awkward, and while that is true, it only bothered me for a minute or two. After that, I barely even noticed they were different. BUT, since the buttons are smaller and don't wrap over the front like most mice, I have significantly less accidental clicks, and don't get accidental clicks from just bumping things.
I don't see this mentioned anywhere in the description, but this is a "use anywhere" mouse. I was using it on a pillow with a very rough texture and it was still tracking perfectly. Not as precise as my dark field primary mouse obviously, but that's a $100+ mouse.
The touch pad between the buttons works well in place of the mouse wheel. It definitely feels different, but like the buttons, it didn't take long for me to adjust. Also, the up and down buttons on the d pad on the side are page up and page down, so they make scrolling through web pages easy. I haven't tried anything that needed the Mouse 3 button, so I don't know if it has that functionality.
I don't think I would recommend this as a primary mouse unless it's all you can afford. But between the use-anywhere capability, lack of accidental clicks, light weight, properly having a slot for the USB receiver inside the battery compartment, and freaking cool factor, this is a perfect travel mouse. And like I said at the beginning, by FAR the best mouse I've seen at this price point.
Edit: after further use, yeah, it's a nice display piece for the shelf, lol! Really it is an impractical form factor, but I love it just for existing! There's a really interesting story behind this mouse!
The scroll pad in the center isn't as easy to use as an actual wheel, but putting in a wheel would have taken away from the retro game feel of it, so...just something you'll have to get used to.
The D-Pad on the side is truly interesting. It offers very limited functionality, but what it does do, it does well. Left and Right (when looking at it from the side) does forward and back, and up and down does page up and down, which helps scroll through sites faster.
I always liked 8BitDo's products, and it's always worth what they're asking. Highly recommended mouse, and a highly recommended company.

Granted I’ve never used a mouse over $30 ...but still.
