You are never prepared for the truth. Nicolas Cage did an Outstanding Job. The Movie is very real and there are actually people so sick like this in the world. It's disturbing to know this and those who do those kinds of things shall receive no forgiveness. Joaquin Phoenix and James Gandolfini are at the Top of Their Game.
The Story Line is Tom Welles/Nickolas Cage, private eye, is hired by a wealthy widow, whose well-known husband passed away recently. She has found a reel of S8-film in a safe. On the film is a cruel slaughtering of a young girl, who obviously does not pretend or act: A snuff-movie. Welles takes up investigation, which leads him to the girl's mother and from there to Hollywood, into the office of a porn flick producer. Welles' rising obsession to solve the case also carries him away from his wife and new-born daughter. But when finally names are at hand, Welles suddenly finds himself on ice much thinner than he planned.

After reading some of the other reviews I really debated on whether or not to watch this movie. As it turns out, I'm glad that I did. I did not find it to be so incredibly violent. I could point anyone who thought that to a few other Cage movies. Even though I liked the movie, it was a little slow. I don't think the porn scenes were all that graphic. After all, the movie needed to keep its R rating. Anything too graphic and it would had to have been an X. The most disappointing thing to me about this movie was the revenge motif that it slid into, although I can certainly understand it. I had no problem with Welles falling apart at the end, although the "save me" line was a little much. I do agree with the person who said in their review that this was Satanism. People want to blame all deviant behavior on mental illness, but that just isn't correct. Evil exists. It really is true that " when you dance with the Devil he doesn't change. He changes you."

Like the lead actor (N. C.) but how he ever got talked into making this movie is beyond any sane reasoning you can come up with. Not only was it smothered with F*** bombs - but the plot makes Stephen King's worst movie look like Mary Pop-ins for sure. Best advice - avoid this disaster like the plague. There is no redemption for this brutally violent - sadistic movie. You've been warned.

It's a very disturbing movie... I'm not sure I'd recommend it tbh. But it's one of Cage's best performances. And it tackles heavy and taboo subject matter. It shows the depravity of mankind. And how we can never be fulfilled so we seek darker and darker things. I'm glad I viewed it, but its definitely not for everyone.

I hadn't seen this in a long time. Wasn't sure whether to give it three stars or four. The story is excellent and really original. This is one of the good Nicolas Cage movies when he was still making good movies. I forgot Joaquin Phoenix was in it, he is so good as the creepy but intelligent weirdo. I remembered loving this movie, what hung me up the second time around is the obnoxious horrible wife. She really ruins a lot of the movie with her tearful over reacting irrational phone calls while Nicolas Cage is trying to solve a horrible murder for crying out loud. She is the worst wife in the world. The ending is midevil, everyone gets it and it's not pretty. Loved this but could of done without the hysterical interuptions from the unattractive harpy wife. I was also a little thrown by NIcolas Cage's emotional breakdown at the end, found it a little over the top for a hardened private detective. Still good, I would definitely recomend this if you somehow have never seen it.

There are so many great films out there and I had to pick the worst one of the lot. With an all-star cast like this, how could you go wrong? The film uses all the cheesy action film tropes, with jump scares that don't make you jump and a continuous dialog of word salad. Complete with fast cars, pouring rain, S&M dungeons, cartoonish bad guys and the thinnest love interest thread to keep women interested I guess; this film is just a free salad bar of negativity and bad scenes which everyone has been sneezing over. God! I thought it would never end. I ended up wishing I'd watched YouTube for two hours instead.

Burrowing deep into the seedy underbelly of adult entertainment, 8mm explores a common urban legend that has existed for as long as film: the snuff film. You can see Tom Welles's breakdown from morally neutral PI to emotionally destroyed vigilante as he digs deeper, but this is not what I would call a fun watch. The villains of the story are easy to hate, but if you're looking for a monster, an overarching boogeyman, you won't find one. Whatever else they are, they are largely ordinary people: sleazy, yes... morally bankrupt, yes... but they would blend in with a crowd, demonstrating that bad people are not as obvious as we'd like.

it was hard to get past the first half hour which made me literally sick to my stomach..and im a total horror movie buff!saw,centipede,hostel,inferno,etc... but as you will see some things are just too realistic not to be enjoyed but to make a valid point..after that it was a good flick and it was nicely done.it reminded me very much of the movie "hardcore" with George c scott 20 years earlier.another good movie same premise.there are corners of the world that are really messed up.this movie will remind me to NOT "dance with the devil"

Not the biggest Nicolas Cage fan although Lord Of War is one my all time favourite films, give that a watch if you've not seen it - brilliant! This one popped up as a recommendation for Norman Reedus fans, yes his 2 minute performance steals the show! Sorry, I'm straying from the point. If you enjoy a good crime drama with adult themes and plot, you'll enjoy this, have a splendid evening.

A very good movie indeed with great performances all around especially from Cage, Gandolfini and Phoenix. The subject matter is very dark which makes the movie even more memorable. For me a definite must watch.
The soundtrack is average except for the track when cage is driving around Hollywood at night searching for the missing girl and which was again repeated at the end credits. I found it to be superb and truly sole stirring but for years I could not find anywhere what it was called or whether it was available for purchase/download. Finally I think (90% sure) I found it. It is actually Moroccan street style music. Look for Cherifa (singer), Berber Blues (album), on iTunes. Perfect entrance music for an Asian boxer I Think, lol.
