Why this song has become a classic, yet never a hit by Big & Rich is anyone's guess. Perhaps they don't choose to
remember what sacrifices were made during the Viet Nam conflict. This is the story of a surviving member of the 173rd Airborne that survived an ambush of 1200 Viet Cong forces. Most men died from that outfit, with one being the first black man to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor since the Spanish-American war for continuing his job as a medic while under fire and gravely wounded himself. This song is about one of the few that lived, though wounded badly. His tale is one of bravery, yet the song reflects how this one day in history altered his life forever. Being raised by a two tour Green Beret veteran helped me appreciate what it was like in Viet Nam in 1965. Often called the fogotten war, this song serves as a tribute to the courage and dedication of the US Armed Forces and one that was well overdue. I highly recommend this song!

This is one of the most patriotic songs and it remembers our Vietnam brethren who gave their lives either by making the ultimate sacrifice or coming home to a country divided that did not thank them for their service and sacrifice....remember that...

every Viet Nam Vet needs to buy this song. I saw them sing this in Sturgis then Niles came out on the stage (The guy the song was about). Every 8th of November I go to my local bar and buy a round, play this song loud and cry.
