Although I'm a lawyer, I'm not usually a big fan of legal thrillers, but this one blew me away. The fast pace and perfect plotting kept me turning the pages, dying to find out what happens and how to untangle the psychological twists and turns. Along the way, I got drawn into the fractured mind of the protagonist and felt his own inner torment.
The novel is more a smart psychological drama about a lawyer and those around him than a conventional case-driven legal thriller, but the telescoping of all the action into one intense day gives it an irresistible flow. And the ending provides all the pay-off promised by the build-up.... and more. Here's hoping this book spawns a sequel and a series!
The book starts with Michael speeding to get to the doctor's office for the gender reveal of his baby. He's held late at work due to his partner (he's a lawyer) wanting to have a drink with him.... at 8 in the morning. Out of nowhere, Michael is told his wife is dead... and has been dead for four days. Michael is apparently a suspect, though he has no recollection of his wife even being dead. She's been calling him every hour at 36 past the hour and the call last exactly 90 seconds, hence the title of the book.
Without giving too much away, I have to say that I was going insane along with Michael (that's a good thing with this genre). The author portrays a person with psychosis well - Michael is faced with not knowing what is reality and what is part of his crazy episode. Is his wife dead? Did he kill her? Or is she really coming home from her parent's house? Which one of these is the actual reality and which one is his mind playing tricks on him?
I do have to say though -- If you're not paying attention, you will get lost and it has the potential to become really confusing. Also, if you don't like profanity or controversial topics, you might think twice about this book. There is lots of sexual content, cussing, and violence. It doesn't deter me at all... it goes with the genre but that's my small little warning to those who might not like reading about it.
The ending is a tad bit confusing as well. I'm not sure if it really ended the way I thought and the author spins it all into a web so that getting the next book is pretty much required to get the answers I'm wondering about. I went ahead and grabbed book 2 and am planning on starting it tonight. I hope it's as good as the first and clears up some things I'm not sure about.
What a roller coaster ride this one was. Talk about the unexpected things that come up and smack you in the face along with the little things in life like driving around with idiots surrounding you in other vehicles, and then, dealing with one's own mind, and in that mind there are other forces working also like booze, cocaine, other medications and then the mind itself.
Yes, this was, is a roller coaster ride of the unexpected and it was a great read. A fun experience.
