Beckerman's writing style here is full of wit, displaying an impressive grasp of 90's pop culture. Prepare yourself for a world where 3D Doritos, Battletoads, and Crash Test Dummies are still in. Every other page I was reminded of an item which was buried by my post-millennial memories. On the other side of the coin, the story takes a stark turn which is relevant and shockingly realistic during the latter half.
All in all, '90s Island is the best work of fiction I have read this year. It has hilarious moments, a realistic and touching romance arc, and enough action to keep any reader on their toes. This book can be devoured over the course of an evening, or enjoyed over a couple of days. Either way, I can promise that you'll be wanting to re-read '90s Island by the time the last page is turned.
The story's twin main characters share a certain '90s nostalgia that's understandable yet absurd, and that nostalgia drives a breezy plot about a present day island trying to recreate the 1990s. Like a great music video, '90s Island takes a clever idea and has as much fun with it as possible before arriving at a satisfying conclusion.
No matter if you loved, hated, or simply survived the '90s, this story takes you there and back before you can consider ditching your smartphone and getting that bad haircut you had 20 years ago.
I applaud Marty Beckerman for creating a novella that is able to pull on the heartstrings of our generation while demonstrating the detrimental effects of not moving forward into the life which our society now offers. The book is captivating; high ponytail in place, I devoured it all in one sitting. I will continue to go to my adult job and download my MP3s, but I will do it with hoop earrings, a smile on my face, and when I come home tonight, I will dust off the VCR and take a trip down memory lane with a clamshell encased VHS.
Party on Marty!
