A Game of Thrones CATAN Brotherhood of the Watch

Game Story

A Game of Thrones CATAN Brotherhood of the Watch

The battle to defend the Realms of Man begins in A Game of Thrones Catan: Brotherhood of the Watch, a strategic game designed by Klaus and Benjamin Teuber and grounded in the engrossing world of George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. Take the Black. Defend Westeros. Become the Lord Commander.

A Game of Thrones CATAN Brotherhood of the Watch

The Brothers of the Night’s Watch recognize you as a natural leader as you struggle for promotion within their ranks. You hope to gain recognition by improving infrastructure in the area south of the Wall known as the Gift.

A Game of Thrones CATAN Brotherhood of the Watch

Drawing sustenance from this unforgiving landscape offers enough challenges, but you must also defend the Wall against the Wildlings fighting their way into Westeros to escape the horrors that awaken in the North.

A Game of Thrones CATAN Brotherhood of the Watch

Build, defend, and rise above your brothers to become the new Lord Commander. But be wary—the north holds many dangers, and winter is coming.

Gameplay

A Game of Thrones CATAN Brotherhood of the Watch

The objective will be familiar to players of the original Catan—the first player to achieve ten victory points wins the game and becomes the new Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch.

A Game of Thrones CATAN Brotherhood of the Watch

Players use lumber, brick, wool, grain, and ore resources to strengthen their hold on the north by building roads, settlements, and keeps; recruiting guards for their patrol; or buying Development Cards. Each of these acts bring players increased power and recognition through the awarding of victory points.

A Game of Thrones CATAN Brotherhood of the Watch

In addition to building within the Gift, players must strategically balance their resources to defend the Realm from Wildling raiders. At the start of their turn, a player rolls three dice: two to indicate which resources will be harvested from the Gift and one to determine which, if any, Wildlings advance toward the Wall.

A Game of Thrones CATAN Brotherhood of the Watch

Once the harvest has been reaped and the Wildlings have advanced, players may trade their resources with each other.

Victory occurs from either improving the infrastructure of the Gift enough to keep it safe, or by the honor of having most valiantly tried to defend the Gift if it falls.

Awesome version of an already great game
    4 out of 5 stars
Awesome version of an already great game
Basic Overview: All in all, I really liked this twist on Catan. With this version, you can either play the original Catan game, or you can play a Game of Thrones style of Catan that includes brand new features: not only do you have to fight against each other to make sure you're building enough settlements, but you also have to work somewhat together to defend against the white walkers who are trying to breach the wall. There's a lot more to worry about with new ways to win the game and the wall element, making this a fresh update to Catan that doesn't become overly complicated. The instructions give an awesome beginners' guide with suggestions on how to play the first time, what characters to use, where to put resources, etc. We had a first time Catan player try the game out and he picked it up immediately and ended up winning the game against two Catan veterans. Outside of some box damage, all of the pieces looked really detailed, and we didn't find any damage on any of the game pieces themselves. It looked like someone took a lot of time making sure the internal pieces would live up to both Game of Thrones and to the style of Catan. Shipping/Delivery: Delivery is the only reason that I'm not giving this 5 stars - it arrived on time just fine, and the plastic sleeve the box came in was undamaged. However, upon unwrapping we saw that the box itself had a few edges that were decently damaged. Not necessarily a huge deal, but my sister (whom I bought this for) was upset, since she cares a lot about keeping things in excellent condition. We had considered returning for this reason, but ultimately we decided to just go ahead and ignore the damage, since it was the holidays and we wanted to play the game as a family while we were all together. Box Contents: The detail in the game pieces was super nice - it looks like someone actually took the time to create the 3D models and they did not disappoint. There are a few new pieces in this version: The board of the game itself is double-sided: you can play either the Game of Thrones version of the game, or you can play the original Catan with GoT pieces. The box also comes with tons of extra plastic bags so you can organize the pieces that you punch out however you like, which was very helpful. Game Play: (assuming you already know basic Catan) We did not play the standard game for this set, and only played the GoT version two times. I imagine this becomes MUCH more intense when you get a group playing more frequently and you end up having more white walkers enter the game. In the GoT version of the game: Each player gets the same three standard pieces as normal Catan: A road, a settlement, and a keep. However, they also get a guard piece in addition. The guards sit on top of the wall and block white walkers from entering the map. Each player also gets a character card that they can use twice before taking a new character. Each character has a different ability, stealing resources, getting rid of walkers, etc. There are also now pieces to represent white walkers - three different characters represented by light gray. Each white walker has its' own "powers" for what they can do and how destructive they are. As you play the game, with every settlements or keep that you build, you'll generate one or two white walkers. With the white walkers, there are new ways to win the game: if a certain number of white walkers breach the wall, the game ends, and the person with the most guards on the wall wins. This ends up adding a nice twist to the game: You have to decide between building settlements and keeps for yourself, or you have to help the entire group try to stop the walkers.

A fun game for the novice and strategist alike.

A Game of Thrones (GOT) Catan has taken all of the elements of the beloved Settelers of Catan and added an interesting twist that Game of Thrones fans will appreciate.

      Ease of Play:
Whether you are new to Catan, or consider yourself a veteran gamer, you will be satisfied with this games ease of play. While GOT Catan maintains many similar elements to that of regular Catan, it introduces new concepts like the Wall of the North, and the Wildlings which add new elements of strategy to the game.
While maintaining the customization that players loved with regular Catan this game still maintains an easy set up and assembly phase. With helpful pictures and diagrams in the rulebook, setup takes about 5 minutes.
Very easy to follow rulebook with helpful hints and visual depictions.
Expect your adventure to take approximately sixty minutes as your strategies play out, the Wildings advance, and you all work together to survive.

      Added Elements:
GOT Catan ably adds a new dimension to the traditional Settlers of Catan games. Some of the new items include:
      - Character cards from the Game of Thrones series with unique abilities add additional options to play.
      - Wildlings which prove to be a devastating force that can end the game for all players if they do not work collectively to a certain degree to maintain defenses on the wall.
      - Wall piece that separates the board into the player half and Wilding half.
      - Unique three and four player setups.

      Construction:
GOT Catan keeps the versatility of regular Catan without having dozens of tiles and board pieces. You can play a customized game every time without spending 20 minutes feeling like you are setting up a puzzle.
GOT Catan pieces are also made of a durable plastic and come in a variety of colors to help players differentiate between teams and the wildlings.
Artistically crafted cards depict your favorite Game of Thrones Characters.

      Conclusion:
Although this game may lack some of the scenario versatility that regular Catan and its expansions have to offer, it does a great job of creating a different game experience every time you play. With so many ways to win or lose, you will have a lot of fun strategizing how to defend the north, hold back the Wildlings, and become the Defender of Catan.

We play Catan often. It's kind of our family thing. We have regular Catan, the expansion pack, and Seafarers. We even have a gorgeous handcrafted set made by Thinking Monk. Yes, we are serious players. It gets pretty fierce, bringing out the sibling rivalries and old family vendettas. So, adding the GoT version seemed natural since we are like the Starks and Targaryens anyway. GoT Catan is absolutely worth it and a great addition to our stack of Catan boxes. It is not a retread with new graphics. It is a whole new game.

While you are collecting resource cards and development cards, wheeling & dealing to build your roads and settlements, and racking up those victory points, you now need to add guards to the wall and keep the wildlings out. This is a collective effort that you need to undertake to protect the Gift from wildlings. You have help from hero cards as well as development cards. If the wildlings make it over the Wall, they will block your resources. Too many wildlings over the Wall will end the game and your settlements will be worth nothing - the guards will save (and rule) the day. These additions add cooperation to the game and give you more ways to win. You still have hidden victory points on development cards and the longest road to add to your tally, but now guards are another way to rack up those VPs and claim your rightful title as Lord Commander of the Watch.

If you enjoy Catan, you'll likely have fun with this more complicated version. If you are new to Catan, play the regular game first. A few of the hero cards seemed a bit difficult to understand so we referred to the instruction booklet often. We still have a question about one card and need to do a bit of online research about that and another rule. We watched a few YouTube videos on setup and game play before embarking on our journey to build and defend. Yes, it's an investment of time. But, next time we play, we'll be ready to go. Those wildings won't know what hit 'em. Now, who has some ore they can trade me for a sheep?

Liked the detail on the hexagon pieces, as well as the characters representing cities, thieves, wildlings, etc. pretty cool spin on the game if your a fan of GoT.

It works for up to 4 players, without the expansion (available separate).

THIS GAME CAN BE USED IN THE ORIGINAL CATAN HAME BOARD. Previous reviews don’t clearly touch on this. The board pieces are slightly different than OG Catan, but the hexagon and cards function the exact same.

If you know Catan, and love GoT, and we’re looking to purchase Catan like us, this is a no brainer. It’s a very large box though to accommodate all the pieces! We’re looking forward to the 5-6 player expansion down the road.

      GAMEPLAY

Me, my wife and friends recently played a game. The rules are a bit more intricate than original Catan, so a game took us about 3-4 hrs to complete. We were playing slowly, and wanted to learn it as we went. It was a good decision to play slow as the “wall” and wildlings add on gameplay are a clever spin, but takes time to understand everything that is at play at once.

If you haven’t played Catan before, I recommend you play it with friends a few times before playing or buying this version. It took a very “skilled” board games friend to manage the rules and gameplay. Someone less knowledgeable about board game or Catan in general should really take their time when playing this to ensure its being played properly.
