I bought this on a whim after reading about the author in an early childhood education course. I loved the cover art but didn't know the plot and wasn't familiar personally with the author.
The first time I read this to my class of 2.5-5 year olds, I was worried that the gorgeous but dark art style would not captivate them, and I fretted over a line about "what would the boys think of a girl at my birthday party?"
But then, the kids requested this book seven more times in three days! They just could not get enough of A Letter to Amy. When a child came back after a few days out sick, his friends rushed up to me and asked me to pull out their new favorite book to show him!
It is good writing, point blank. A simple story line that invites lots of questions and leads children to make inferences, "What did he wish for? Who is Eddie? Why is she sad?"
The author is a treasure and a classic! Buy this book. Your kids will remember it for a lifetime. (In fact, I unearthed a latent memory recently where I recalled reading an excerpt of this on the reading comprehension portion a standardized test in like 2nd grade, lol.)

My name is Amy, and I’m a kindergarten teacher so I had to buy this book. It was very cute, and my students loved it!

I love this book. It's a sweet story about a shy boy who insists on inviting his friend, a girl, to his birthday party. The powerful illustrations simply jump off the page and carry the plot all the way to the end.

I used to use this book with my second graders to teach inference. You have to make an inference about the main character's feelings towards Amy. One of my favorite Ezra Jack Keats books!

We have "A Snowy Day" and "A Whistle for Willie," so we were excited to add this to our collection. My two year old loves it! We've used it to begin "writing" letters to others, which is a blast.

I really like this book because of racial diversity but the boys do not like a girl coming to the party which makes it a trade off in terms of gender inclusion. Still, you can have a conversation about why girls and boys can be friends so overall not bad

An immensely comforting story

This is a quiet but beautiful story about a child's adventure to post a party invitation to a special friend. Ezra Keats was a white man who chose to make an African American child the star of his "Peter" stories at a time when segregation was still the status quo.
