In today’s world, muddling through all the conflicting health information is difficult. Parents are told opposing things all the time. The average parent doesn’t have the time to sort through all of these conflicting messages — they’re too busy simply trying to raise their children as best they can! They’re left with having to pick a source or two to trust and their own instincts. This book was born because of this confusion. Parents need a trusted resource written by a mom, for moms, to help them weed through the controversial issues out there and figure out what will work best for them. A Practical Guide to Children’s Health doesn’t tell you what you *must* do. Each section explains the current controversy (if any) and all the major issues, then offers potential solutions. In many sections I share what our family has decided, although I make it clear that is just what works for us (and this is valuable because I share our thought process). The book is well supported by research, with over 300 primary sources, largely from medical journals. It has a foreword written by Dr. Tyson Perez, DC. All of the sources in the PDF versions of the book are clickable, so that parents who desire to do more research on their own and simply use this as a “jumping off” point may do so. This book is valuable even for more experienced “natural health” families because of the depth of the research available. It would take families hundreds of hours to search for all of these sources themselves (as it did for me); instead they can simply click through the long list of resources as desired!

Not worth any stars

I think that Amazon should have the option to give no stars when I come across books like this one.

While I am all about raising my daughter in a more natural and holistic manner, the author has set out advice and personal opinion as scientific fact. She has not provided any credible research to back up her claims and at times has cited research that has been refuted by respected alternative medicine sources.

Keep in mind that the author recommends using teething tablets that contain nightshade. Nightshade is also know as belladonna and is one of the most toxic plants known to mankind. One or two berries can kill a child. A single leaf from the plant is known to kill an adult. And she wants you to give this to your baby!!

I have to ask what kind of parent would wait an entire week to see a doctor when they've broken their arm? I don't know about you, but I'd call that child abuse.

If you are looking for a book about raising your children in a more natural, holistic manner I urge you to keep looking. This is not worth the money and quite honestly will lead to lawsuits.

Not a book for raising healthy children!

I'm all for practical raising of children. Too much of today's parenting involves bubble-wrapping paranoia. But "practical guides" shouldn't contradict solid science. The writer makes numerous claims that *sound* plausible, but on further research, I found that her assertions are based upon myths. Among these was the myth of vitamins curing medical conditions, well-child visits not being important, and ideas about "super foods" that contradict common sense that most parents have. Even my midwife found her claims foolish. Please, take your child to a doctor for well-child visits when they are young, this is not just for vaccination schedules. There are a variety of very dangerous medical conditions that aren't visible to a parent, but a doctor will recognize. Talk to medical professionals and don't take this writer's advice. She has no idea what she's talking about.

Get advice on how to raise your children from a women who claims her eldest child is inferior to all of her other child due to her having postpartum depression, having an epidural, being a first time parent is difficult and obviously it is the infants fault, and her own mother disliking her.

Then get in depth advise on how to ignore science, or even the previous chapters because who cares about consistency when you can. Have hypocrisy? Kinda like her blog, one post she shames the allowance of children having any vitamin A due to it causing cancer, later she uses vitamin A rich oils in her homemade sunscreen because they are safe but sunscreen is not, except for thus sunscreen that is a prize for a giveaway, but wait sunscreen is toxic and kills children.

Yep. Totally good parenting advice. Real mom of the year.

The author states, "Parents need a trusted resource...". So far so good, but she fails to understand that for a resource to be trustworthy their advice must be grounded in some sort of expertise, and she has none of that. Before paying for this book check out the author's blog and Facebook page where you'll find a truly impressive array of false and dangerous assumptions about nutrition, education and medicine.

Good for Homemaking, Bad for Real Science

I borrowed this book from a girlfriend, though I was pretty skeptical from the start, because I know Kate and I know about her pseudoscientific views and tendencies to ignore science and facts. Well, I didn't expect much of her, and I wasn't disappointed. All the chapters smack strongly or an irrational prejudice against allopathic medicine, suspicion of doctors and general conspiracy-theory thinking. She claims that her information is "well supported by research, with over 300 primary sources, largely from medical journals." Well, that may be true in a technical sense, but what she fails to realize is that her research is poorly done and the studies cited done by notorious cranks (such as the Geiers) and riddled with errors. She also downplays the potentially dangerous complications of vaccine-preventable disease. I appreciate her recipes and homemaking tips, because she's surely an expert in that. I think, though, that she ultimately needs to stick to the things she knows, namely housewifery and child rearing, and leave the actual science and medicine to real professionals. Her grasp on science is decidedly weak.

"measles is better than autism"

Despite measles being one of the leading causes of death for young children worldwide (with about 314 deaths every day according to the WHO factsheet on measles), Kate Tietje has the gal to insist that "Enough with the fear-mongering, let's be honest: measles is better than autism. We have five reasons why the disease is preferred over the vaccine." (A quote from her facebook page on August 19th, 2016 accompanying a blog post she had written about the subject.
This is the type of misinformation that Kate Tietje, author of "A Practical Guide to Children's Health" promotes. She is totally unqualified to write this book and has no understanding of scientific research.

Pseudoscience bunk.

And this from a woman who's too busy popping out babies and working on her homemade, unregulated and potentially dangerous potions in her kitchen/garage/rented space to actually care for the ones she already has. Instead of actually educating the kids, she unschools them, which to get means simply ignore them till they ask a question.

Her kids are always hungry according to her own Facebook posts, and live in dirty rooms where there are dirty diapers on the floor. And this is just in the pictures she herself posts!!

No thanks.
