so this movie captures you with an enticing box cover an interesting premises. I don't know if this movie was considered a success in Japan but I've seen much better Japanese movies. The only thing I can possibly think of why this movie would be popular is it's some kind of cult hit in the tradition of "The Room." (it's so bad it's good type of movie.) I don't get it frankly and I doubt many western viewers could or would. If you must: forward the movie to the last shot of the movie to get a glimpse of the Hanako Nanjo's tattoo. Otherwise skip the poor plot, dialogue, and camera work. This movie is a waste of two hours and ranks right up there with the worst movies I sat all the way through (admittedly I finally started fast forwarded towards the end as well.)
I am surprised at how much I enjoyed this low budget flick. The movie was pretty straight forward, no crazy twists and turns, no stunningly beautiful shots or special effects. But the acting was actually quite good, considering how low budget the movie was. Surprisingly solid. If you like b-rated Yakuza movies, you could do worse than this.
This is supposed to be an insight into a woman swept up by her love for a Yakuza henchman despite his boozing, gambling and nonchalant "control" of a new gang. The violence is fake and arbitrary, and the attitude of the top echelon resembles a group of fraternity boys hazing a neighborhood. Skip it.
I don't speak Japanese so I can't talk about the accuracy of the translation, but it is an interesting translation. The point of view of the narrator is interesting, the use of slang is interesting, the assumptions about gang life are interesting. The lead actress is visually stunning, making final scenes powerful.
What movies with subtitles lack in superior screenplay, they make up for in giving a unique perspective of another culture. I enjoyed the new perspective this movie gave me about their relationships and how key honor is in this setting.
This is a subtitled movie. It was nothing what I expected and overall a bad movie to watch. Too little actions but the story line did follow the story of a women from being single to eventually leading a gang of murders.
