About A. J. Fotheringham
I am a Montreal-based writer who began scribbling stories and poetry at the age of nine. I’ve had a life-long love of words. I used this skill to build a career in journalism, communications, translation and publishing.
Along the way, I raised four sons and published a children’s book, a poetry book, short stories and non-fiction. I am currently writing the Lamb’s Bay Mysteries, a cozy mystery series based in the fictional town of Lamb’s Bay, a coastal community whose charming atmosphere hides a series of secrets.
I am a graduate of McGill University (BA) and Seton Hill University’s Writing Popular Fiction program (MA). I enjoy reading, writing, managing a writers’ group and holding creative writing workshops.
I am a member of the Quebec Writers Federation, Crime Writers of Canada and the West Island Writers' Group.

Blog postI am a scribbler. Notes, ideas, facts, you name it, it ends up in one of my notebooks. The thing that always amazes me is how many notebooks I go through. And yes, I keep them all. They are full of ideas for stories, snippets of book outlines, poetry, comments about things to do or find out about and yes, the occasional grocery list and To Do list.
Lately I’ve been considering using an electronic writing tablet that could convert my notes to type so I could upload them to my laptop. I6 months ago Read more -
Blog postWith COVID restrictions, it has not been easy or even recommended to travel in some areas. So, for a moment, let’s just use our imagination and think about our dream location for a writing retreat.
Do lake cabins tempt you? Are you dying to spend time walking in the woods and paddling about in the water of your favorite lake?
Or are you a beach person? Would your ideal spot be a cottage near the beach with wild roses around the door and a shady porch for lazy afternoons?

Blog postAuthors often get questions about their books and the characters and settings of their stories. I’ve had a few lately so I thought it might be fun if I listed them here with my responses.
Here we go.
When did you start writing and why?
I started writing at the age of nine. I woke my mother up early one morning. She wanted to sleep in so told me to go back to bed and read my books. I told her I had read them all even my new poetry book. She said go back to bed, let me s11 months ago Read more -
Blog postI’m back from my blogging hiatus and down time that was necessary for my continued good health. It was working on two books at the same time that did me in. Now I am back in Lamb’s Bay.
I had just started cleaning up the first draft of Death at Dune Road, Book 6 in The Lamb’s Bay Mysteries series, when Homicide at the Hotel, Book 7, demanded attention. I found myself tied to my computer, editing and cleaning up one book and then writing like a maniac on the other. I lost track of time12 months ago Read more -
Blog postMy latest chapbook contains poems which chronicle the devastating effect “progress” has had on our indigenous peoples as the European so-called “civilization” rolled out from the east coast to the west across their ancestral lands. The process was brutal and destructive.
This week the news is full of the discovery of children’s remains discovered at the old residential schools where indigenous children were sent to “civilize” them. Another shameful and disturbing part of Canada’s past1 year ago Read more -
Blog postI was pleased to launch Dancing at Dove Lake, Book 4 in The Lamb’s Bay Mysteries, earlier this month. This plot of this book has a special meaning for me. It came to me one misty morning while sitting watching the ducks on a lake up north. I thought it was a good plot idea but had no characters to insert into the script. So, I put my notes aside and went on to other projects.
Writers often do that. We see something that piques our interest, so we start making notes. Sometimes it1 year ago Read more -
Blog postI took a step back this past couple of weeks from social media, writing and editing as I felt the need for some “me” time. I’m the first to encourage others to do this, but I’d been on such a roll since last spring that I had started to forget to take time for myself.
The “me” time was basically used for sleeping in, taking bubble baths, watching suspense and mystery movies, reading a lot of mystery books and, above all, making sure I was eating well. I have a tendency, when deep into1 year ago Read more -
Blog postDid you like high school? Were those days the best or the worst days of your teenage life? What happened that was significant and what was the worst thing that happened to you?
In Book 5 of The Lamb’s Bay Mysteries, Dancing at Dove Lake, a high school event gone bad turns into revenge served cold years later. This book will be published this spring, but I wanted to give you a heads up about it. I hope you will enjoy it.
High school was not my favorite time, but thankfully I ha1 year ago Read more -
Blog postDo you have any strange habits or are you superstitious about things that can affect your writing? Do you have to dress a certain way when writing? Do you prefer to write in a coffee shop or at home? On the commuter train? What’s your writing environment like? An enclosed home office? The back patio? The kitchen table?
I’ve heard a lot of interesting stories over the years about writers, their environments and their habits. I thought it would be fun for us to share on this blog for a1 year ago Read more -
Blog postSo, they say timing is everything. Well, my timing was a bit off when I decided to put myself out there, get a website, etc., and start publishing my work on amazon. This was in the fall of 2019.
With help of a web designer, I got my website up and running by Christmas 2019. I planned to publish the first book in early 2020. Someone had offered to come and sit with me while I figured out the KDP system. Meanwhile my books had been going through various beta readers and final editors.2 years ago Read more
