Forget the plastic soda makers of the past and update your kitchen aesthetic with the word’s first sparking water maker designed with a complete stainless steel enclosure. The Aarke premium carbonator/ Sparkling Water Maker features a compact, minimalist design with 3 independent safety valves. The lever carbonates the water and also releases excess pressure from the Aarke stainless steel bottle. It couldn’t be simpler, just push the lever and hold until you hear a buzz, then release and unscrew the bottle from the carbonator. The Aake premium Carbonator/ Sparkling Water Maker requires no electricity or batteries.

We use 3-4 bottles of seltzer a day and have gone through 3 sodastream soda makers (1 crystal, 2 penguin) in 8 years. We've never liked the big, clunky, dark plastic sodastreams (though the penguin is slightly better than the crystal) or the harsh, loud noise they make, but we did like the glass bottles that go with these machines. Given how often we used them, we haven't been surprised they conk out after 2.5 years or so, but hoped for better. So, we were cautiously optimistic about the aarke.
The PROS: From a design perspective, the machine takes up much less visual space and is more attractive than the sodastreams. It also offers an easier and more pleasant user experience. Unlike the sodastreams (particuarly the crystal) the operating mechanism - the lever - is positioned for comfortable use and the sound it makes when carbonating is a pleasant "swoosh." In addition, the open design makes it easier to clean than the sodastreams - if any water drips out of the bottle (which supposedly happens, but has not yet happened after two weeks of daily use), the drip tray easily lifts out for cleaning.
The CONS: The bottles are by far the weakest part of the product. First, they are plastic. Second, they are $20 and only one bottle came with the soda maker. Third, they have a shelf life of about 3 years - the date after which they should not be used is stamped on the side. Fourth, the bottles are not dishwasher-safe (unlike the glass soda stream bottles). Finally, the metal cap is actually a metal cover glued to a plastic cap, and the metal cover fell right off after a few days, so now we are just using it with the black plastic cap with a big hard blob of dried glue on top. Also, the whole machine is surprisingly light. I'm guessing that, like the bottle cap, the stainless steel may be a thin sheet wrapped around plastic innards.
My husband just loves it and the water came out great, one pump for regular fizzy but you can do 2 or 3 if you want it so bubbly.
AARKE has put an end to all that. This machine makes a hissing noise to release some of the gas during the carbonation process. It occasionally makes a greater growly-grumbling noise when I pump the lever, but it probably wouldn't do anything more than make the dog open a sleepy eye. I'm happy with this new machine, but I do need to pump the lever four times to achieve the level of carbonation I desire. My only other comment is that it is made mostly of plastic. It looks like stainless steel, but in fact, it's the canister of gas that gives the device its heft, not the device itself.
