Editorial Reviews

Martha Burk calls herself a rabble-rouser. Her letter to Hootie Johnson, chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club -- home of the Masters Golf Tournament -- ignited a national conversation about the right of an all-male private club to cling to tradition. In the letter, Burk urged Augusta to open its membership to women for the first time since the club was formed in 1932, so it wouldn't be an issue at the 2003 Masters. There have been op-ed pieces, spirited debates on cable TV and one high-profile resignation: Thomas Wyman, the former CEO of CBS, the network that happens to air the Masters tournament. Burk may be a tough-talking women's advocate, but the road to her leadership of the NCWO started more traditionally. She was married at 18, had the first of two sons at age 20 and was a soccer mom long before anyone knew what that was. But she always knew she wanted something more, and she got it long before she wrote one letter to one golf club. Correspondent: Michel Martin.
