Dee is our kind of down and out heroine - though never nearly as down as she feels. She's 40, single, a cancer survivor and hates her mundane job. Her best friends since college - the siblings who chose each other - are Gail and Neil. These three musketeers couldn't seem more different from the outside looking in: Dee, the "normal" every woman, Gail, the rich witch, and Neil, the gay designer. As the title suggests, there is an abundance of fabulous snark.
The premise is one of Gail's bored schemes - a bet, with $50,000 for Dee (which she knows exactly what she wants to use the money for, but doesn't want to tell her ridiculously wealthy bff to just buy for her - one of the most laugh out loud moments of the book came when she explains to Harold that she doesn't want Gail to just buy her this item. (More about Harold in a moment but I have to insert that I happened to read that line in a rather full doctor's office waiting room...)
I adored Harold from the moment we met him. Dee's defense of her friend's callous treatment of "the staff" endeared me to all three characters. The more we saw of him, the more I adored him.
I don't want to give away any plot points but this is an absolute must read. I will be recommending this one to everyone.
Dee is forty-something and starting over after a tough few years. She is getting back in the game. Her best friend Gail dares her to date the alphabet and she accepts. Along the way we meet 26 guys who are “interesting”. The loopholes she finds will have you laughing out load.
There are a few twists and turns, but the one constant is Gail and Dee’s friendship. They have been there for each other through everything and continue to be. Danielle weaves a great story of friendship, while heart wrenching at times, love and respect, with a side order of snark.
I know it’s pretty late in the summer, but this would be a great beach read!
If you like snarky protagonists, then this book is for you. My one complaint and for me it is a big one is that the book felt like it was written by someone with English as a second language. There were so many instances of redundant words being included in a phrase or misuse of then and than or were and where. I think that all books need to be proof read and not just spell checked.
Dee isn't the only character dealing with issues. Her BFF, Gail, is a whirlwind who may have all the money in the world, but her life is empty. The two of them together are hilarious. Almost like Patsy and Edina from Absolutely Fabulous. Their relationship is richly developed with just enough back story. I really can't say any more without entering spoiler territory. The ABC's of Dee is a wonderful story about best friends, life, love, and finding happiness all while trying to figure out what you want to be when you grow up as the big 40 looms on the horizon.
