"The ABC's of Sexual Assault by Michelle Ditton, RN, and Laurie A. Gray, JD, is a basic primer for the health care providers who deal with children where concern is sexual abuse.... This book will especially help new healthcare professionals as well as law enforcement and those working in the field of child abuse understand the basics of child sexual abuse so that they can help the families that are affected by this crime."
~Diana Faugno MSN, RN, CPN, SANE-A, SANE-P, FAAFS, DF-IAFN
"I found this book to be a valuable resource for those involved in the assessment, treatment and support of victims of sexual assault....As an author of several books on homicide investigation and the series editor for over 65 titles..., I was impressed with the detail and practical information presented by the two authors who are obviously experts in their respective fields. In fact, I would have liked to have had the authors publish in my series."
~ Vernon J. Geberth, American Academy of Forensic Sciences, Former Commander of Bronx Homicide, N.Y.P.D.
"I found The ABC's of Sexual Assault to be immensely informative and extremely well assembled. Intelligently written, the guide presents a sensitive subject matter in a professional and easy to read and understand manner.... The use of real-life situations and stories -- from both the perspective of the victim and the many professionals involved in a case --compel a reader to see not just the relevance of what is presented, but the necessity of knowing it."
~ Jamie Michele for Readers' Favorite
"This book will be a great tool for all the members of the multidisciplinary team that work with victims of assault and their families to explain and challenge those myths. "
~ Dr. Joyce A. Adams, Child Abuse Pediatric Specialist
"This is a must have for Law Enforcement, Prosecutors, and Judges. Very informative and a great resource! I would recommend this for anyone investigating child abuse cases or sex crimes."
~ James E. Newbold, Assistant Chief/Detective, Berne Police Department
"This easy-to-read guide gives medical and non-medical professionals who aren't familiar with the law a desk-top starting place to learn the lingo and assist them in understanding the process. ... I recommend this book to school nurses, CASA volunteers, and any person who's involved in sexual assault cases."
~ Michelle M. Weidenbenner, author of Cache a Predator
From the Author
Much of the information for this book comes from trainings, workshops and articles we have prepared together and presented professionally. We have organized the information into three sections: Anatomy, "Bunk" and the Courtroom. We have included a glossary at the end for quick reference as well as a list of recommended resources. Part 1: Anatomy is divided into sections on the examination and treatment of all patients, female anatomy, and male anatomy. Part 2: "Bunk" addresses common myths and misconceptions that often undermine the investigation and adjudication of sexual assault cases. We also look at the evolving definition of rape and the difference between criminal statutes that require force as an element and those that require only a lack of consent. Part 3: The Courtroom offers a very brief overview of criminal procedure for context and then considers the collection of forensic evidence and general guidance to assist attorneys and witnesses as they prepare for trial.
About the cover:
The broken letters used in the title reflect the physical and emotional condition of many patients when they first come to the Fort Wayne Sexual Assault Treatment Center and present for treatment. The broken letters can also represent members of a Sexual Assault Response Team who are overworked, underpaid, and conscientious but feeling burnt out, as well as a team whose effectiveness is undermined by misinformation and miscommunication, and a court system designed to protect the rights of defendants, often with little regard for their victims.
In contrast to this brokenness, the bamboo forest on the cover embodies our belief in the resilience of the human spirit and the need for each of us to be flexible enough to bend rather than break as we join together in the pursuit of justice in sexual assault cases. Bamboo is a giant but sturdy grass that grows quickly and regenerates fully. It symbolizes the healing and recovery we hope to cultivate through truth and understanding.

I found Michelle Ditton, RN and Laurie A. Gray, JD's The ABC's of Sexual Assault to be immensely informative and extremely well assembled. Intelligently written, the guide presents a sensitive subject matter in a professional and easy to read and understand manner. As a layperson, this book opened up my eyes to a topic I knew virtually nothing about, but did so in a way that invited every possibility to be explored. The use of real-life situations and stories—from both the perspective of the victim and the many professionals involved in a case—compel a reader to see not just the relevance of what is presented, but the necessity of knowing it. I would absolutely recommend Michelle Ditton, RN and Laurie A. Gray, JD's The ABC's of Sexual Assault as a foundational guide, not just to professionals who deal with the subject matter, but to parents, school teachers, and anyone else who may have cause to have an understanding of everything associated with sexual assault.

The women who wrote this book have fifteen years of experience working in the trenches on child abuse cases and spent hours compiling information for the book in hopes that they will help. I recommend this book to school nurses, CASA volunteers, and any person who's involved in sexual assault cases.
