So *I* was shocked at its short lifespan (especially given the cost, over $200) even if he wasn't.
There is just more electronics involved in these tasks, packed into less space, than the older modems. They are GOING to get hot. So in order to keep that from happening again I bought this USB fan kit, comes with 2 fans hooked together, to replace the floor fan I had aimed at the new modem and separate router. I was getting some of these anyway to put on my LED grow lights to cool them (they will ALSO last longer if you keep them cool) so I took one of those and shoved it under the router (because its a flat design, give me vertical any day) and stood the other one up next to the cable modem (which is vertical).
I've got them on low and they are cooling both devices very well. On low the router gets barely slightly warm, and the better design of the vertical case for the modem leaves it totally cooled down with this little fan. If I had it to do over I'd look harder for a vertical router as well, its easier to keep them cool. AND they take up a lot less space! I've got a bunch of old computer cases with fans going to waste, I will likely make some USB fans from all those old bits and pieces, but they are likely to be a lot louder. This fan is extremely quiet even on high. I can't hear it at all on low.
Also these fans in particular are optimized for humid environments so I wouldn't use anything else in my grow room. A lot of people use the other dual fan kit with the larger fans but they are using them to move air over microgreens to cut down on mold and fungi, I don't have that problem, I just need to cool the lights to improve their longevity, so I'm trying these smaller fans (take up less headroom over the lights, giving me more space under the lights because I can move them further up).
I highly recommend cooling your router/modem/game console whatever electronic devices you have sitting around generating heat with some kind of fan, and these are very quiet, easy to assemble (as in plug them in), and very effective. I've seen some people insist that you shouldn't do this because it might "blow dust into the case" - where do these guys live, in the middle of death valley? LOL! Just do it. I've had a floor fan blowing across my very very ancient laptop to keep it from overheating for about 5 years now (even laptop coolers can't cool it enough) and its still going strong. I can even play (very very old) games on it still. Heat will kill your devices WAY faster than whatever tiny specks of dust these fans probably won't blow into the cases anyway.
Also, if you have one of those stupid refrigerator closet things where they've built an enclosure all the way around the fridge, that is trapping heat and shortening the life of your expensive stainless steel fridge - you can use these fans to draw hot air out of that too (though I'd go with the larger version for that). Personally I'd tear that crap out but failing that, install these in a side or back wall and pull that heat out of there. Your fridge will thank you. Your bank balance will be the better for it over the long haul.
I'm using them behind my laptop with my laptop on a stand—it has made a bit of difference in temp, not as much as I would have hoped, but still worth it to see if it had any difference. 15'' Macbook Pro Mid 2014, biggest difference was refreshing the the thermal paste. But anyhow, my Macbook is older and I rarely hear my internal fans.

I use it to help cool a raspberry pi home server (Start9, Embassy OS - used for Bitcoin, Lightning node and personal file server). I run with one fan on the server and since I have two fans, used the other on the external SSD hard drive) at the lowest speed. Running prior to adding the fan, my server reported CPU temperatures from 51 to 63 degrees Celsius. With the fan, CPU temperatures are now 39 to 46 degrees.
It has 3 speed levels, I experimented with all three and higher fan speeds did not make a major difference to CPU temperature and the higher fan speeds while quiet were definitely louder. At the lowest setting I couldn't hear the fan at all when I was 4 feet away.
You should be aware that the two fans are connected, so there is only one USB plug to power both and there is only one speed control switch that controls both together.

The one thing I would say is -- if you have sensitive devices (external displays, hard disks) on our USB bus, switch off the fans using the inline switch BEFORE you unplug them. They draw quite a lot of power, and the jolt if I just unplug them is enough to crash my displays, which in turn crashes the machine. But as long as I switch them off THEN unplug, it's fine. I've actually just ordered a high power USB PSU so I can plug them straight into the wall instead of running them off my USB hub, at which point it won't be an issue anyway.
I don't often give 5 star reviews, but I'm very happy indeed with these (and they arrived the very next day, despite the covid delays, though I may have just been lucky!) -- and should anything change, I'll come back and edit ;)

Comes with long wire for connecting to USB socket and has a female USB connector fitted should you want to add more fans IE. daisy chain/ link.
Has four settings, off, low, medium and high.
Have bee watching TV and a film now for a few hours and I have one fan blowing air in and the other fan reversed as an exit fan. Just checked the amp and where as before it would be very hot to the touch item is cool, so it works. Very good quality product, looks well built and you can tell by the packaging that its a good product. Also instructions very informative.
Reading the instructions can see "designed in California" but made in china but still QC is very good. Would defo recommend.

The fans are quiet, but there is an electrical buzzing noise which drives me slightly crazy, considering the price I don't think its fair to complain too much, it does what I want it to do well. I have a computer in not very well ventilated area and heat was building up when under heavy loads for prolonged periods, these fans do help surprisingly well even on the lowest setting just to shift the air away. If you are near the fans or fussy about noise levels I wouldn't recommend it, I can live with it on the lowest setting though, and I've started using headphones more often which prevents me hearing it too!
If your using these for something over a metre away from you I'd have no hesitation to recommend them, if you sit near them they may annoy you depending on ambient noise around. I like to work in silence so I tend to turn them off when concentrating.

These vents are very well built, not cheap plastic, and very easy to install. Operates very quietly and smoothly and turns on with my xbox which is all I need. Huge difference and immediate improvement as I had them facing the grills and now it just pulls and expels the hot air out. Life saver for my consoles and should have got these sooner!
