1. Fox 40 Sonik Blast CMG Whistle (Red)
2. Acme 636 Safety Whistle (Black)
3. UST Marine JetScream Whistle (Yellow)
I compared the three of them in the video (in that order). I think the Acme 636 Safety Whistle is best based on it's small shape, loud sound, and price. I think the Fox 40 Sonik Blast CMG Whistle is a close second because the sound is really similar to that put out by the Acme, and I like the soft rubber for gripping with teeth/lips. The UST Marine JetScream Whistle was disappointing. I blew with the same force I did with the other whistles and most of the sound was just a rush of air rather than a whistling sound.
Watch and listen to the video and see what you think. Happy whistling.
UPDATE: I need to say that over the years my high range hearing has been damaged to the point where it no longer exists. Whistles that I rate poorly MAY be loud to people with full range hearing, but the whistles I rate highly all have a lower frequency which I can easily hear. Something to think about; hunters and other people who have been exposed to very loud noises, like gunshots, may have damaged high range hearing, and may not hear your high pitched whistle. Whereas pretty much everybody can hear a lower pitched / lower frequency whistle. Plus, if I'm injured (think of a fall resulting in broken ribs)I will not be able to give my whistle a hard blow, so for me to rate it highly it must be LOUD without having to blow it hard.
As far as functionality of the whistle goes, it is very loud. I did read through the reviews of people who said it wasn't loud. But I can assure you that this if blown right, it can be so loud that it will irritate your ears.
Blowing this whistle reminds me of my kiddie days when I had a whistle and played with my friends. I don't know when I will use this but I just thought it will look cool on my motorcycle key chain.
I liked it so much that I have added another one of these to my cart. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for a very loud and good looking whistle.
I cannot stand single purpose products and while some are absolutely necessary, I always look for that 'other use.' If you happen to be in a big box store and hear 2 or 3 beeps from ACME, it is probably me or some other old fool. 'John must be in the store looking for Judy.' or something as silly. It works. I sure hope I never have to use it for other than peaceful activities.
I may be a bit paranoid but I'm a former paramedic and value emergency preparedness immensely. While this whistle is a tiny and inexpensive item, I believe it's an essential part of her kit.
I noticed that some people said it's tough to blow on whistles of this type, but I didn't have to try hard at all. One word of caution: It's LOUD and HIGH-pitched. (I believe it has a dual pitch, but I couldn't stand to listen to it long enough to determine that.) If you plan to blow it indoors, I recommend ear protection. My ears hurt after 2 tries. Poor dogs in range of this thing will go nuts!
The one thing I didn't like about the whistle is that it didn't come with an attached cord. Minor detail, and I'm sure some people prefer it without the cord since it can also be attached to a key chain, zipper, or anything else with a loop.
