In bright sunlight tilted towards the sun, the panel brought in over 7 amps at 12 volts (over 85 watt-hours). On a particularly cloudy day, it only brought in 1.2 - 1.6 amps at 12 volts. Not as much as we'd like, but enough to recharge our RV battery with about 10 amps for the day. On sunny days, it brings in over 25 amps at 12 volts, more than enough to help replenish our battery. We've been very happy with this unit. If we decide to dry camp for longer than a weekend, we will purchase another unit to cover us for cloudy days. With the two units, even on a cloudy, we would bring in about 20 amps per day. Enough to keep us from draining our RV battery.
-- It's very light and portable.
-- The panels fold inward, no need for a bulky case.
-- Provided the rated wattage for the unit. For a 105 watt solar panel, less 80% for normal inefficiency of any solar panel we could purchase, that is 84 watt-hours and that is what we measured.
-- The solar controller can easily be replaced with a higher priced unit if wanted.
-- The solar panel kit works right out of the box: hook it up to a 12 volt battery, set it out in the sun, and it starts charging immediately.
-- A fuse is built into the positive terminal of the battery clamp.
-- The built in legs work well for angling the solar panels towards the sun.
-- For storage or carrying, the solar controller, wires, and battery clamps all fit in the pouch behind the solar panels. Nice to keep everything together.
-- We had a few questions and their customer support team have been great!
-- Priced very affordably for the wattage, complete kit, and portability.
-- The durability may be suspect, it's difficult to tell how long it will last. A trade off to the much heavier build units, that require a case.
-- We would prefer a solar controller with a digital display.
-- A longer cord would be nice, this one is only about 16 feet from the solar panels to the battery clamps.
I contacted Acopower to ask questions before purchasing and promptly received a reply from one of their electrical engineers who confirmed they use 14 AWG wire in their folding solar panel kits - I could find no other folding kits in this price range that came close to this. The Sunpower panels they use are wired to continue producing power even when partially covered, and are extremely efficient - we really need this living in the Pacific Northwest with cloudy or overcast days.
The included 10A solar controller works fine and it's nice to have a USB charge port, but will only work when also connected to a battery. Will probably get a small sealed battery to have on hand when we're not using the solar "generator" or trailer. This kit is perfect for our Chafon 500W Lithium Ion Solar Generator, but may be too powerful for the smaller 100W "generators". It’s also the perfect size to carry in our vehicle or tuck inside the trailer, and the metal grommets and built in legs are great for quick and easy setup.
On a sunny April day at noon this panel produced MORE than the stated 70W for us: with our solar “generator” for a draw and using a multimeter the panel consistently produced 4.3amps and 20.3volts (87W). It even went as high as 4.6 amps when the sunlight was strongest. I may try using a small MPPT controller to take advantage of the wasted voltage (over 12v converts to amps) or if we ever connect in series to another panel.
So far this 70W solar panel kit has performed flawlessly and beyond our expectations. It is priced higher than some of its competitors, but I would rather pay a little more and invest in something that is built to last. Thank you Acopower for an excellent product and excellent customer service!
FYI this can also be ordered directly from Acopower.com (or through Walmart's marketplace) with free shipping (fast!) and no state sales tax unless shipped to California where the company has it’s US location.
