Destiny is a great game, although does feel like there is so much more they can do with it. It’s becomes a little repetitive after a while, and starts to loose it’s plot line on later missions. But that doesn’t mean it’s a bad game at all, and the visual is brilliant for an early release game. Recommend to anyone who played and loved halo.
One of the frustrating aspects of the game is the lack of clear explanation as to how to play and what is actually going on. Some online research can provide essential beginners guides to get you started but the games tutorial is sadly lacking. Unlike many RPG's which seem keen to provide extensive detail to read about their world Destiny hardly seems to explain anything. Essentially the game is set in the far future, a big round benevolent beach ball of an alien called The Traveller has made contact with mankind, provided advanced technology allowing space travel and generally made everything better. Then a bunch of evil aliens/demons have turned up, enemies of The Traveller and messed everything up. The Earth and its colonies lie in ruins and you take the role of the last defenders of mankind, called Guardians who fight against the evil aliens/demons.
The gameplay is basically a sci fi first person shooter with RPG elements. There are story missions and random patrol missions that you can play solo or in group co-op. There are strike missions that are group co-op only and will match you up fairly quickly with others online. And there is a PvP arena where you can fight other players, which is just as good as Overwatch or Battleborn.
The RPG elements are sadly quite limited. You do get to make up your own character, choosing from 3 races, 3 classes and designing your own appearance. Each class begins with two sub classes you can choose from, with more sub classes being added from the DLC. Your character gains experience from missions which grants them levels and unlocks new abilities. Most of the social aspects of the game are centred around The Tower, the Guardians HQ, where for some reason you drop into a third person view and can go shopping, claim rewards or just hang out. There are few activities to encourage roleplaying, no crafting system or other activity not geared toward combat, and the NPC's seem to have little to say.
Most missions involve little more than endless gun fights - grinding XP and hoping for a lucky loot drop. While The Taken King adds more missions than the basic game had you will still end up repeating the same missions many times over in order to gain XP or just for something to do. The single player campaign provides an interesting enough story but its still only really an excuse to get you out there killing bad guys.
On the whole though gameplay is a lot of fun. The combat is fast and frantic, with lots of mobility (the jet packs allow most combat to be quite three dimensional). In addition the graphics look nice, they have their own style and allow for seamless exploration moving from interior to exterior environments without a hitch. Playing with friends is the best way to play Destiny, but its easy to group up online as there is little that needs to be said most people just get on with the action. Mastering the subtleties of the different subclass abilities makes the difference between being a good Destiny player and a bad one. Once you reach the cap at level 40 the game takes a new direction where unique equipment can make your character distinct and your tactics can be honed to perfection. Many Destiny fans try maxing out each subclass just to see what they can do!
Overall then I found Destiny to be a fun game, just not a great game. The combat can get repetitive, and there are just not enough RPG elements to give it the extra depth it needs. You could make an obvious comparison with Mass Effect which has the RPG elements but not the co-op gameplay. It all depends on which you prefer. With more DLC being promised Destiny continues to expand, so if you do invest the time into a character it could keep you going for a very long time to come.
The community is great - clans are always looking for new members and people are very generous in helping new players (like myself) get to grips with a surprisingly massive game world. Don't be put off by people saying the story isn't very prevalent; The Taken King improves on this massively, and with more new content to follow soon there will hopefully be more of the same. Would thoroughly recommend to anyone who likes gaming either casually or as a hard-core gamer.
As far as the story goes in this game... In still confused by it. But still enjoy it all the same. Team work in raids is so much fun too. I also recommend the Destiny app for your smart phone too. It's a great companion for the game, and great if you need fire team members.
I did order through Amazon but ended up returning it as it arrived so late, so bought a copy in GAME instead!
UPDATE 2 MONTHS LATER
well, I am still having huge fun with Destiny TTK. find myself reaching for the PS4 controller at the end of the day and a good hour or two easily flies past!! Agree with others that the team element in raids is such fun when you can talk tactics using your headset's mic. I do also love PvE as well now my character is very powerful.
