This cable is an easy way to connect a Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone Black, a microcontroller, or other TTL serial device to your computer. This makes the cable ideal for interfacing with debugging and programming consoles of various devices. This can even be used to install alternate operating systems on some WiFi routers. This devices uses the PL2303TA chipset and is compatible with Windows 8! There are also drivers available for Windows XP/Vista/7/8 and MacOS X 10.6 to 10.10.

Cable build is of high quality and is a good length (~3 feet). Mine is one of the newer ones (made post-21 Dec 2016) so it uses the SiLabs CP2012 controller versus the previously used Prolific PL2303 controller. No problems with that out of the box under Linux 3.x: cp210x driver loads and away I go!
I would definitely recommend this cable over some of the cheaper, no-name alternatives you can find here on Amazon.
Adafruit Industries says on their website regarding this cable that "As of Dec. 21, 2016 we will be shipping cables with SiLabs CP2012 chipset instead of Prolific." However, Device Manager on my Windows 10 PC shows that the cable I received is using a Prolific Technology PL2303 chip. So it seems that the shipper's inventory is a bit old...
The good news is that the latest Prolific driver did install automatically on Windows 10, no need to go searching for a driver. So no stars taken for slightly older stock...
"Use it up, make do, or do without!" :^)
It does support bidirectional serial, but I rarely use it for that. I just use it for serial debug output to my PC.
